SKU: 8133 Category:

An extremely rare and probably unique example of a late-17th Century English naval seaman’s cutlass.  With distinctive “dog-head” pommel and cast-brass hilt.  I have seen and sold a small number of these cutlasses over the last 25 years but have never encountered one with this kind of iron clamshell guard – most have brass shell guards.  It also features a wide, fullered and slightly curved blade with faint traces of engraving.  This is one of the earliest examples of an official cutlass type that was used in the Royal Navy and very few have survived.  It is in excellent condition.  Blade length is 31.5 inches (36.5 inches overall).
