English Napoleonic Fireguard – Egyptian Campaign of 1798-1801.
Unusual and probably unique English regimental Napoleonic wooden fireguard with tapestry insert commemorating the Egyptian campaign of 1798-1801. The word "EGYPT" has been sewn into the Sphinx. A number of British Army regiments served during this campaign and were entitled to use this battle honour, including The Black Watch and a number of British Army regiments of foot. The fireguard would have been used to protect the face from the fierceness of an open fire when close up to it. In good condition and showing the elegant carpentry of the period. Dimensions are 9.5 inches x 7.5 inches.
