Rare Dated 1849 Imperial Austro-Hungarian Naval Cutlass & Scabbard/Frog
£1,295.00
19th Century Austro-Hungarian naval cutlass.
In stock
Extremely rare Austro-Hungarian naval cutlass with original scabbard and frog. These cutlasses were original French Model 1801 naval cutlasses that were captured from French Napoleonic forces and then refurbished by Schnitzler and Kirsbaum (“S & K”) with all French markings removed and an Imperial Austrian double-headed eagle engraved to the blade (see the pics) and double-headed stamps added to the bowl guard and the scabbard chape (see the pics). This example is dated 1849 and is know as the “Old Type” naval cutlass – in 1849 there were 480 outstanding in the Venice Armoury (see the page exerpt below) so there is likely to be very few existing in the world nowadays. Cutlass has a large iron bowl hilt with single-fullered blade with comparable saltwater age wear. Comes complete with its original leather and brass-mounted scabbard and super rare leather sword frog. You are unlikely to come across such a complete example again. Blade length is 26 inches (31 inches overall).
