A fine English C.1770’s Naval Military Officer’s Hanger Sword. This is a short officer’s hanger of a type that was particularly favoured by English naval officers as the shorter length allowed the officer to wield his sword in the confined spaces of an 18th Century warship. The sword comprises a gilt brass stirrup hilt with ribbed leather grip and slightly curved blade that is engraved to both sides with scrolling foliage and abstract designs. The sword comes complete with an associated scabbard that has had the leather replaced at some later date. Blade length is 24 inches (29.5 inches overall).
