A superb and high quality example of a French Model 1822 Cavalry Officer's Sword. This sword is likely to date from the Crimean War (1854-1856) period and was manufactured in Germany by Gebruder Weyersberg who are a noted German sword maker of the period who went on to supply both combatants during the American Civil War. They are mentioned in many reference books about US cavalry swords of the Civil War. The sword comprises a decorative cast brass, three-bar hilt and is the grip bound with fishskin and twistwire. Grip is in very good condition.
Very good etched blade
What makes this sword special and takes it above the usual examples of this model is the terrifically etched blade - most blades of this model are actually plain. The etching is very crisp and includes martial trophies, intricate floral motifs and military banners. Condition of the blade is excellent. Comes complete with its original scabbard. Blade length is 35 inches (41 inches overall).
