A Rare C.1800 Continental Naval Seaman’s Cutlass
Of simple manufacture and with an iron, stirrup hilt and decorated bone grip. With brass plate to top and underside of the crossguard. Engraved decoration to both sides of the forte. Plain, unfullered blade. It is likely that this was purchased privately by the captain of the ship and issued to the crew. It is very light and flexible and would have been very effective when used in a combat situation at close quarters.
Condition of the Cutlass
With commensurate age wear to hilt and blade.
Specifications of the Cutlass
Blade length is 28 inches (33 inches overall).
