North African Arabic 17th Century Nimcha Saif Sword

Rare and very early North African Arabic Nimcha Saif Sword

Most Nimchas date from the 18th-20th Century but this is a distinctive form of Nimcha known as the "Zanzibar" hilt.  This Nimcha has a superb quality blade either in imitation or taken from a 17th Century European sword - the fine tempering and workmanship on the blade makes me think that it is probably a European blade mounted on a North African hilt.  It is deeply engraved "IHS" within the fullers to both sides.  The hilt is wood and features a very fine cut steel knucklebow.

Condition of the Nimcha

In excellent condition for its great age with a fine polished blade.

Specifications of the Nimcha

Blade length is 36 inches (41.5 inches overall).
