Antique African Zulu Warrior’s Assegai Spear

african-zulu-assegai-spear-2

Antique African Zulu Warrior’s Assegai spear.  With distinctive leaf-shaped blade with fine patina.  The blade exhibits a distinctive rib to its full length.  The blade is attached to a hardwood shaft and is bound with cordwire.  These short throwing or stabbing spears were also known as an Iklwa within the Zulu nation and proved a fearsome weapon in the hands of a Zulu warrior, most notably during the late-19th Century Zulu Wars against the British Army.

Flared terminal to the spear shaft

The wooden shaft of the spear has a flared terminal.  The overall condition of the spear  is very good – the blade has been cleaned but does show signs of wear and generally good age.  Total length of the spear  is 46 inches.  This assegai would make a great display piece especially when combined with a Zulu shield or knobkerrie.
