Ottoman Turkish C.1890’s Senior Infantry Officer’s Sword

ottoman-turkish-officers-sword-3

Terrific and impressive Ottoman Turkish C.1890’s Senior Infantry Officer’s Sword

This sword is one of the best examples of an Ottoman Turkish army officer’s sword that I have encountered in a long time.  It is of very large proportions and similar in style to Imperial German military officers’ swords of the period and it is likely that it was made in Germany.  There letters A and C are to be found under the blade near the forte and these might represent the sword making company, Alex Coppel.  The lionshead hilt is very detailed and includes two ruby glass eyes to the pommel.  The grip is bound in fishskin.  The blade is extensively decorated and includes Turkish crescent and moon, war trophies, stands of arms and foliage. It comes complete with a heavy steel scabbard.  This is a most impressive sword in the hand and would have been carried by a very senior officer, probably of General rank.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition – a little wear to the grip and scabbard – blade is clean.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32.5 inches (39 inches overall).

British C.1900’s 1897 Pattern Infantry NCO’s Sword – Grenadier Guards

british-1897-pattern-grenadier-guards-nco-sword-3

A scarce British C.1900’s 1897 Pattern Infantry NCO’s Sword – Grenadier Guards

This is a seldom seen example of a dated 1911 1897 Pattern Infantry NCO’s Sword carried by a soldier in the Grenadier Guards just prior to WW1.  It was made at the Royal Enfield arms factory in London and comprises a nickel plated hilt and blade.  Interestingly, the hilt retains the VR (Victoria) cypher and the blade is dated to 1911 – this could have been an economy measure.  The grip is wrapped in fishskin and bound with silver twistwire.  The blade is regimentally stamped to the Grenadier Guards (GG) on the inner side of the guard.  The are also numerous issue marks to the blades fortes.  Comes complete with leather field service scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In excellent condition – blade retains all original nickel plated finish.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32.5 inches (39 inches overall).

British Napoleonic Royal Navy Officer’s Sword

british-napoleonic-naval-officers-sword-2

A scarce British Napoleonic Royal Navy Officer’s Sword

A c.1800’s naval sword carried by an officer in the British Royal Navy.  What makes this sword interesting is that it carries the owner’s initials on the hilt langet – very few swords of this period are onwr marked.  The hilt is of stirrup type and the grip is wrapped with fishskin and copper twistwire.  The blade is straight and decorated with nautical motifs, including anchor and bouys.  It is also has a royal crown and cypher.  No scabbard.  Although the condition of the blade counts against the sword, it is still very rare to find examples of British Napoleonic naval officers’s swords.

Condition of the Sword

Grip with some fishskin losses.  The blade is corroded in places, particularly towards the tip.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 29 inches (34 inches overall).

British 1822 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword and Scabbard

1822-pattern-infantry-officers-sword-3

A very good example of a British 1822 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword and Scabbard

This is quite an unsual sword and comprises a typical gilt brass Gothic hilt with VR (Queen Victoria) and grip bound with fishskin and silver twistwire.  The blade is of pipe back form and features some excellent etching that includes the royal cypher of King George IV (1820-1830).  The owner of this sword was no doubt a serving officer when the new monarch (Victoria) came to the throne in 1837 and decided to keep the blade (through the reign of King William IV aswell) but change the hilt – this was common practice and common sense, especially if the sword blade was of high quality as is this example.  The sword was manufactured by the famous London sword maker, Prosser and is maker marked to the blade forte.  The sword comes complete with its original brass scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition – the blade is very clean and crisp.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 34.5 inches (39.5 inches overall).

British 19th Century 1822 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Levee Sword

british-1822-pattern-levee-sword-2

An early example of a British 19th Century 1822 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Levee Sword

This is a levee pattern sword that would have been carried by an officer when off duty and probably attending ceremonial military occasions or regimental dinners and balls.  Is of typical 1822 pattern and with a gilt brass Gothic hilt and VR (Victoria) royal cypher inset to the hilt.  I would think that this sword dated from the late 1830’s/early 1840’s.  The grip is bound with fishskin and copper twistwire.  The blade is of early pipe back form and with etched decoration including royal cypher, victory wreaths and foliage.  No scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

The hilt is is fine condition – blade has wear and staining.

British 19th Century Scottish Volunteer Artillery Officer’s Sword

1821-scottish-royal-artillery-sword-3

Scarce example of a British 19th Century Scottish Volunteer Artillery Officer’s Sword

British early 19th Century Military Bandsman’s Sword

british-military-band-sword-2

Original example of a British early 19th Century Military Bandsman’s Sword.  A British Army military bandsman’s sword from the early 1800’s.  Comprises a brass lionshead hilt and ribbed grip.  The blade is plain.  No scabbard.  There are many different variants of the British military bandsman’s sword and it appears that regiments were given some leeway as to design and decoration.

Unusual British bandsman’s sword type

This tended to fade after 1856 when a standard pattern was introduced.  This is a sword type not seen too often. I was lucky enough to acquire two examples of this sword so please see the other listings.  In good overall condition with some wear to the blade – small age fracture to grip.  Blade length is 22.5 inches (28 inches overall).

British C.1800’s Military Bandsman’s Lionshead Sword

british-1800-band-sword-2

A fine British C.1800’s Military Bandsman’s Lionshead Sword.  An unusual example of an early 19th Century British Army military bandsman’s sword.  With cast brass hilt comprising a distinctive lionshead pommel and ribbed grip.  The blade is plain apart from some very faint engraving that looks to be indicating manufacture by the Wilkinson company.  This must be a very early piece from this company as this style of bandsman’s sword was prevalent during the late-Georgian and early Victorian period.

Sword stamped to top of the crossguard

The sword is stamped to the top of the crossguard.  No scabbard.  In good overall condition with age darkening to the blade.  Blade length is 22.5 inches (28 inches overall).

British C.1900’s 1827 Pattern Rifle Officer’s Sword

1827-pattern-wilkinson-41352-sword-3

British C.1900’s 1827 Pattern Rifle Officer’s Sword

A good example of a British early 1900’s Rifle Officer’s Sword made by Wilkinson Sword.  It has a solid tang patent hilt with chequered grip bound with twistwire.  The blade has the owner’s intials to the blade near the forte.  Also included royal crown, coat of arms and cypher and scrolling foliage.  No record of owner in the Wilkinson ledger but the initials might help with identification.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition – some loss of nickel plating to hilt and scabbard – blade is extremely clean and retaining just about all original polish.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32.5 inches (39 inches overall).
