British Napoleonic Cavalry Officer’s Sword

british-napoleonic-cavalry-officer-sword-3

British Napoleonic Cavalry Officer’s Sword

A very good and original British Napoleonic Cavalry Officer’s Sword.  With typical gilt brass stirrup hilt and including its original sword knot – quite rare.  The grip is made from ribbed ivory and the curved blade is etched with a number of motifs including GR royal cypher, royal coat of arms (post-1805) and stands of trophies.  Blade edge is marked to J J Runkell, the German sword blade importer.  The sword comes complete with scabbard that is maker engraved to R Johnston, late Bland and Foster.  A good honest piece.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition commensurate with its age – sword blade is slightly proud of the scabbard, probably due to leather shrinkage. Some nicks to end of blade.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32.5 inches (37 inches overall).

Indian 19th Century Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

indian-cavalry-troopers-sword-3

free-shipping-1

FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING

An unusual Indian 19th Century Cavalry Trooper’s Sword. This sword would have been issued to native Indian cavalry soldiers in the service of the British Army in India.  It is likely to have been manufactured in India and comprises a steel three-bar hilt with a chequered leather grip.

Large and heavy blade

The blade is of massive proportions and is of a heavy weight.  It would have been pretty devastating in the field.  Interestingly, the grip is quite small and obviously made for use by Indian troopers.  Complete with typical Indian tulwar-style leather scabbard.  In good condition with a very clean blade.  Blade length is 31 inches (35.5 inches overall).

C.1790’s British Royal Navy Boarding Axe

british-naval-boarding-axe-2

C.1790’s British Royal Navy Boarding Axe

A very rare and original C.1790’s British Royal Navy Boarding Axe.  The boarding axe comprises an iron tomahawk head with typical single tooth for grabbing and dragging rigging.  There is also a chisel point to the other side.  The axe head is attached to the original wooden shaft by domed rivets.  At the end of the of the wooden shaft is an iron plate that was used to hammer in nails.  The proportions of this boarding axe would have been ideal to wear stuffed inside a seaman’s belt and was also utilized as a general tool on board ship.  This is a completely genuine Napoleonic boarding axe and should not be confused with any copies that are currently being produced in the United Kingdom and sold as original British naval boarding axes on auction sites.

Condition of the Boarding Axe

Scottish C.1745 Highlander’s Fighting Dirk and Scabbard

scottish-1746-highland-dirk-3

A super rare Scottish C.1745 Highlander’s Fighting Dirk and Scabbard

This is a unique and massive Scottish C.1745 Highlander’s Fighting Dirk and Scabbard.  It is 100% completely original and comprises a bog oak carved hilt with iron rivetted pommel.  The blade is of massive proportions.  It comes complete with its original tooled leather and brass mounted scabbard – it is exceptionally rare to find a proper fighting (rather than the more common, later decorative examples) Scottish Highland dirk from this period and especially so with its original scabbard.  It has two slits in the scabbard to allow a baldrick to be inserted and so carried over the shoulder – a typical method of carrying weapons during this period.  The dirk was purchased recently from a family in Kendal, North Britain and had been in their possession for many generations – it is possible that it has been in Kendal since 1745.  During the Jacobite rebellion of 1745, the Highlanders entered Kendal  – this is an except from a history of the rebellion –

“The government forces under Wade and the Duke of Cumberland had not arrived in Macclesfield until the 10th of December, the day the Jacobites had arrived in Wigan. At Macclesfield the duke received intelligence that the Jacobites had left Manchester that day. Leaving Lancaster on the 15th, Charles’ army was scarcely out of the town when some of the government horse entered it. The Jacobites formed in order of battle; but the alarm turning out to be false, the army continued its march to Kendal. The British horse followed for two or three miles, and appeared frequently in small parties, but attempted nothing. The Jacobite army entered Kendal that night, where they were met by the Duke of Perth and his party. On his way north, the duke had been attacked in this town by a mob, which he soon dispersed by firing on them; but in the neighbourhood of Penrith he met with a more serious obstruction, having been attacked by a considerable body of militia, both horse and foot, and being vastly outnumbered, was obliged to retreat to Kendal.”

This dirk is exactly of a type that would have been carried by a Scottish Highlander at the battle of Culloden in 1746.  Here is a Scottish Highland dirk from the early-mid-18th Century that is totally unique, of museum quality and historical importance.  These early dirks rarely comes onto the market.

Condition of the Dirk

In very fine condition for its great age – small piece missing from handle.

Specifications of the Dirk

Blade length is 13.5 inches (19 inches overall).  The width of the blade is 1.75 inches.

British Canada C.1780 American Revolutionary War Artillery Gunner’s Powder Horn

A super rare and unique British Canada C.1780 American Revolutionary War Artillery Gunner’s Powder Horn.  Absolutely massive and original American Revolutionary War period British Artillery Gunner’s Cow Horn Powder Flask.  The sheer size of this can only mean that this was used for cannons, couped with the fact that the original owner has engraved a cannon to the flask.  Other motifs that have been engraved to the flask include a large British royal crown, Irish harp, owner’s initials(?) – “RI”, and maple leaf – probably signifying military service in Canada.  In terrific condition and retaining the original stopper and iron chain.  Pics tell the story on this one – extremely rare and unique.

Condition of the Powder Horn

WW2 New Zealand 4th Armoured Brigade Regimental Pennant

new-zealand-4th-armoured-brigade-pennant-1

A rare WW2 New Zealand 4th Armoured Brigade Regimental Pennant

This is a unique WW2 New Zealand 4th Armoured Brigade Regimental Pennant.   Very scarce and original – probably unique – regimental pennant for the New Zealand 4th Armoured Brigade. This illustrious battle group had a very colourful military career – for more information please go to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4th_New_Zealand_Armoured_Brigade .  The pennant features the brigade’s tactical sign of a white dragon on a black background.  The pennant is in virtually mint condition – it had been put behind a large glass frame and this must have protected it during all these years – was not practical to ship so I took it out. Is dated to 1942 at the bottom and with British War Department arrow.  A rare find for the New Zealand WW2 collector.

Condition of the Pennant

In virtually mint condition.

British WW1 Royal Flying Corps KIA Framed Memorial

royal-flying-corps-memorial-1

A unique British WW1 Royal Flying Corps KIA Framed Memorial

This is a fine British WW1 Royal Flying Corps KIA Framed Memorial.  A unique and moving example of a WW1 British carved wooden framed memorial to Lieutenant Albert Henry Peters of the Royal Flying Corps who flew with 54 Squadron, a famous fighter squadron that had many aces.  For more information on the squadron go to here.  I have been able to acquire his army records and it appears that he joined the RFC as a cadet and was killed in France on May 15th 1918 – he is buried at the Les Baraques military cemetery in Northern France.  The lifespan of new pilots was very short in WW1.  There is the chance here to fully research this officer and it would make a great project.  The heavy wood frame features aircraft, vehicles, angels and soldiers with bowed heads.  In the middle is a glass frame that houses the details of Lieutenant Peters. This was no doubt commissioned by the family.

Condition of the Memorial

Condition is excellent.

Specifications of the Memorial

Dimensions are 21.5 inches (height) and 17.5 inches (width).

Canadian 19th Century Grand Trunk Railway Rifle Volunteers Sword

canadian-grand-trunk-railway-officer-sword-3

A Canadian 19th Century Grand Trunk Railway Rifle Volunteers Sword

A very rare and scarce Canadian 19th Century Grand Trunk Railway Rifle Volunteers Sword.  This sword was carried by a senior employee of the railway who joined the company’s volunteer rifle regiment, probably in the 1860’s.  For more information on the history of this company please go to here.  There is also an interesting discussion of these swords here.  Sword is of 1827 Pattern Rifle Officer’s type with strung bugle inset to the steel hilt.  The grip is bound with fishskin and copper twistwire.  The blade is etched with the Grand Trunk Railway name and Rifle Volunteers.  Also included is the Queen Victoria (VR) royal cypher, crown and scrolling foliage.  Complete with original steel scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In excellent condition – blade particularly bright, crisp and clean.  Some light staining to scabbar.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32 inches (38 inches overall).
