A Massive British Late-19th Century Bowie Knife

This is an excellent example of a British late-19th Century bowie knife with a staghorn grip and massive clip point blade stamped SHEFFIELD.  The pommel is made from German silver and it is also stamped with a registered patent number.  A good quality piece.

A highly unusual antique Chinese Marching Drum

The drum retains its original skin to both the top and bottom of the drum and the top is covered with a number of images and lettering. I have had the these looked at and been told that the images include a king or God (of wealth and prosperity) often depicted riding a black tiger and holding a golden rod. He is also sometimes shown with an iron tool capable of turning stone and iron into gold. This is what he is probably holding in his right hand. He is also wearing a sash with writing on it. This bears the family name of ‘Wong’ and his first name, Zheng Yu. The square tablet of stamped writing is probably telling a story about the owners boat, and how as a businessman his boat helps him to trade over many seas. This is what we have been able to glean from the images etc. The body of the drum is wooden and covered with handpainted images of dragons and stylised motifs.

Condition is worn in places, commensurate with its age.

Diameter of the drum is 10.5 inches. A unique piece.

Pair of Matching Silver-Mounted Gurkha Kukris

A terrific and original pair of matching, silver-mounted Gurkha kukris complete with scabbards.  These kukris probably date to the middle of the 20th Century and feature horn and brass handles and well wrought steel blades.  The scabbards are covered with pierced silver decoration, comprising winged animals, peacocks, crossed kukris, floral motifs and chained silver shields.  Also includes by-knives.

Condition of the Kukris

In excellent condition throughout with some fading to the velvet scabbard covering and a small loss to silver in places.

Blade length of the larger kukri is 11 inches (15 inches overall).

An excellent French C.1820 Infantry Officer’s Smallsword.

This French c.1820 Infantry Officer’s Smallsword has attractive and ornate gilt brass decoration to the hilt featuring the French national cockerel symbol to both the pommel and shell guard.  There is also a neo-classical bust in relief to the knuckle bow.  The hilt has mother of pearl slab grips.  The blade is of triangular form and with engraved decoration.  This sword would have been carried by a French infantry officer during the reign of King Louis Philipe I (1830-1848).  An almost identical sword can be found on page 399 of Jean Lhoste’s book – Epees – Portees en France Des Origines a Nos Jours – see images from the book below.

Condition of the Smallsword

In good, overall condition and with dark patina to the blade.

An original 19th/20th Century North African Tuareg Takooba Sword

This is a North African Kaskara Sword of type usually associated with the Tuareg peoples of Morocco and the Sudan.  It comprises a cruciform hilt covered in leather and a long and wide, multi-fullered blade that is stamped with crescent shaped motifs to both sides.  It comes complete with a tooled leather scabbard and hanging straps.

A scarce British C.1800 Naval Officer’s Sword

A British C.1800 Naval Officer’s Sword with brass stirrup hilt and engraved fouled anchor to the hilt langet.  The grip is covered in a form of old tar or sailcloth.  The blade is plain and curved.  It would have been an effective fighting sword and is very similar to contemporary Napoleonic cavalry officers’ swords.

This is a C.1770 French or Continental Infantry Hanger Sword of a type carried by European troops during the late-18th Century.  It has the hilt style of French infantry soldiers’ hangers of the period and comprises a brass hilt with leather and brass twistwire to the grip.  The blade is plain and slightly curved.  No scabbard.

Highly unusual C.1800’s Chinese(?) Eastern Fighting Knife

The design of this C.1800’s Chinese(?) Eastern Fighting Knife is very unusual and comprises a ribbed tortoiseshell grip with large solid brass pommel nut and crossguard.  The blade is very heavy and seems to have the profile of a Japanese sword blade.
