Excellent pair of Antique 19th Century Polychrome Teracotta Nubian Figures. These handpainted figures were produced at the end of the 19th Century and into the early part of the 20th Century. They are normally described as Nubian or exotic African figures although to my eye these look more like North African or Arabic - I think that the term "Nubian" was a generic term for all African figures at that time.
Both figures represented as water carriers
The pair of figures are represented as water carriers and each one has been painted in great detail, with close attention paid to their traditional costumes. They both stand on idealised plinths. Condition of the figures is very good for their age although I would suspect that they have probably undergone some restoration during their lifetimes as is normal with this fragile material. Due to their large size, they would both make impressive display figures. Height of each figure is 27 inches. Due to their considerable weight and size, appropriate shipping charges have been applied although you are most welcome to collect!
