Javanese 1900’s Kris Dagger and Scabbard

kris-dagger-antique-3

A good example of a Javanese 1900’s Kris Dagger and Scabbard.  Comes complete with a fine, hand decorated brass scabbard and polished hardwood mounts.  In good overall condition for its age.  The distinctive wavy blade (indicative of Kris’s) has been produced with typical forged layering and the carved hardwood grip is particularly intricate with designs of foliage and abstract shapes.  This is an indicator of good quality and the kris is showing definite age and so I would date this example from the early-mid 20th Century.

Blade layering

The production of a kris blade includes a process of layering and forging that would have added considerable extra strength to the blade.  It is a process of blade making that has been undertaken for many centuries throughout the world and I many cultures, from the Vikings through to the Japanese Samurai sword makers.  Blade length is 13.5 inches (17 inches overall).  This would make a fine addition to a collection of antique kris daggers and displays particularly well.

French Dated 1830 Garde Nationale Officer’s Sword

french-garde-nationale-sword-2

This is a seldom seen French dated 1830 Garde Nationale officer’s sword.  The sword comprises an elegant brass, three-bar hilt with partial leather and brass twistwire to the grip.  The blade retains just about all of the original blue and gilt decoration and includes Garde Nationale 1830 and Liberte Ordre Public to either side.  Other fine decoration includes elaborate gilt stands of trophies to the forte and further along the blade.

Condition of the Sword

As mentioned, most of the leather to the wooden grip is missing but twistwire remains.  If the leather is restored, this would be a very fine sword.  Blade in excellent condition.

British 19th Century Orkney Artillery Volunteers Officer’s Sword

british-orkney-artillery-volunteers-sword-3

A rare British 19th Century Orkney Artillery Volunteers Officer’s Sword

This sword was carried by an officer in the Orkney Artillery Volunteers during the 19th Century – probably c.1860’s.  This far flung string of Scottish islands (around 10 miles north of Caithness) probably had quite a small military contingent so this sword must be pretty rare.  The sword has a typical artillery pattern three-bar hilt with fishskin and brass twiswire to the grip.  The blade is etched with a regimental designation, including “Orkney Artillery Volunteers” and “Staff 1st Administrative Brigade”, artillery cannon, royal crown and cypher and scrolling foliage.

Condition of the Sword

In fair condition – wear to hilt and blade – some edge nicks.  Scabbard is has nickel-plated mounts – probably associated although a good fit with no movement.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 31.75 inches (38 inches overall).

British 1897 Pattern Army Sword with earlier Cavalry Blade – Wilkinson

british-1897-pattern-wilkinson-2535-sword-3

A highly unusual and unique British 1897 Pattern Army Sword with earlier Cavalry Blade – Wilkinson

This is a fascinating sword and of a type that I have not encountered before.  It comprises an 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s hilt (from the reign of King George V) for service in India and is combined with a terrific and wide, cavalry fighting blade by Wilkinson Sword (serial number dating it to 1883 – owner unknown).  The blade is designed for combat and the owner must have intended to use it in the field. Is possibly a family blade that was kept by its owner through to the next two monarchs (Edward VII and George V).  The hilt is nickel-plated with a grip bound with leather and copper twistwire and comes complete with original scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In superb condition – blade is virtually mint.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 34.5 inches (41 inches overall).

US Civil War Horstmann Model 1821 Infantry Officer’s Sword

us-civil-war-horstmann-officers-sword-3

An unusual and scarce US Civil War Horstmann Model 1821 Infantry Officer’s Sword.  This is a scarce US Civil War infantry officer’s sword and is based on the French Model 1821 Infantry Officer’s Sword but is fitted with a US Horstmann and Sons blade.  Hilt has simply crafted decoration – am supposing that this is a Horstmann copy of the contemporary French infantry officer’s model as it does not seem as crisp as the French imports and is also probably pre-Civil War.

Named to Horstmann on blade forte

It is stamped to Horstmann and Philadelphia to both sides of the.  The sword comes complete with its original steel scabbard.  In good overall condition with a well toned blade.  The twistwire is absent from the grip.  Blade with very light peppering in places.  Blade length is 31.5 inches (38 inches overall).

British C.1790 West Kent Militia Infantry Hanger Sword

west-kent-militia-hanger-sword-3

A very rare British C.1790 West Kent Militia Infantry Hanger Sword.  This sword was carried by an infantryman serving in the West Kent Militia who were originally formed in 1758 and played a prominent part in the defence of Britain during the Napoleonic Wars.  For further information about the history of the regiment please go to here.  The hanger comprises a brass hilt and leather grip.

Sword regimentally engraved to the blade

The hanger is engraved to the West Kent Militia – “WKM” and with the soldier’s number – 13.  This designation is repeated to the scabbard locket and guarantees that both the sword and scabbard have always been together.  The blade is of typical form, single-fullered and also maker named to Osborn and Gunby (Birmingham).  An official government inspector’s mark is stamped to the blade forte.  In very good shape overall.  Split to brass scabbard chape.  Blade length is 27.5 inches (36 inches overall).
