A fine British C.1800’s Napoleonic Cavalry Officer’s Sword

An unusual British C.1800’s Napoleonic Cavalry Officer’s Sword.  This is a non-regulation example with an elaborate hilt consisting of a series of cut steel, curling hilt bars.  The grip consists of ebony, wrapped with silver twistwire.  The curved blade is etched with stands of trophies, foliage and turk’s heads.  No scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

Hilt missing some small pieces of ebony.  Blade with heavy wear in places.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32 inches (38 inches overall).

A scarce American/European C.1780 Naval Cutlass

This is an unsusual and rare American/European C.1780 Naval Cutlass.  The style and method of manufacture probably indicates an American origin although these cutlasses were also seen in European hands.  Comprises a simple iron hilt with copper ferrule to the grip that is made from ribbed wood.  Wide, slightly curved blade.  For similar examples of these early cutlasses, please see Swords and Blades of the American Revolution by George Neumann.

In good overall condition with pleasant dark patina to both the hilt and blade.

A very rare British C.1800 Royal Artillery Officer’s Sword

This is a seldom seen example of a British C.1800 Royal Artillery Officer’s Sword and comprises a distinctive canted gilt brass hilt with leather and silver twistwire to the grip.  The oval langets has an engraved cannon and stack of cannon balls.  The blade is of considerable proportions with a hatchet profile.  The blade is engraved with a number of motifs – now quite faint.

In good overall condition – wear to end of blade on one side.

A rare C.1780 American Infantry Officer’s Hanger Sword

This is a rare example of a C.1780 American Infantry Officer’s Hanger Sword and is typical of the simple infantry sword styles adopted by American officers during the late-18th Century.  For similar examples, please refer to Swords and Blades of the American Revolution by George Neumann.  Sword comprises an iron hilt with ivory mounts and a D-Guard knucklebow.  Blade is single-fullered and slightly curved.

Condition of the Hanger Sword

In worn condition commensurate with its age – blade with wear and nicks.

A unique British 1897 Patt. Royal Engineers Sword – owner played in 1875 FA Cup Final

This British 1897 Patt. Royal Engineers Sword  was owned by Lieutenant G H Sim who played in the 1875 FA Cup Final for the Royal Engineers against the Old Etonians.  The Royal Engineers lost the match 1-0.  For more information on the Royal Engineers A F C (Amateur Football Club) and G H Sim, go to these links – here and here.  The sword is typical of the 1897 Pattern and comprises a plated steel hilt with pierced inset royal cypher (VR) of Queen Victoria.  The blade has extensive and excellent quality decoration including the owner’s name, Royal Engineers lightning bolts, cannon, royal crown and cypher and scrolling foliage.  Grip is made from fishskin bound in silver twistwire.  Also retains its original leather sword knot.  Complete with leather field service scabbard.  It appears that Lieutenant Sim had a long military career (worthy of further research), including service during the Boer War and we find him a Colonel in the Royal Engineers by 1906.  Have located a photograph of the Royal Engineers AFC in 1872 – not sure which one is G H Sim but he is there.

Condition of the Sword

In very good condition – blade in terrific shape with all original polish remaining.

A British c.WW2 1912 Pattern Cavalry Officer’s Sword.  A typical example with large, engraved bowl hilt and fishskin and silver twistwire wire covering to the grip.  Blade is etched with royal cypher of King George V, royal crown and coat of arms.  Complete with leather field service scabbard.
