Scottish Dress Skean Dhu Dagger

scottish-skean-dhu-dagger-3

Scottish 20th Century Dress Skean Dhu Dagger

A good example of a Scottish dress skean dhu with white metal mounts and inset citrine stone to the pommel.  Plated blade and complete with original scabbard.

The sgian-dubh is a small, singled-edged knife worn as part of traditional Scottish Highland dress along with the kilt. It is worn tucked into the top of the kilt hose with only the upper portion of the hilt visible. The sgian-dubh is normally worn on the right leg, but can also be worn on the left, depending on whether the wearer is right or left-handed.  The name comes from the Gaelic sgian-dubh. Although the primary meaning of dubh is “black”, the secondary meaning of “hidden” is at the root of sgian-dubh, based on the stories and theories surrounding the knife’s origin, in particular those associated with the Highland custom of depositing weapons at the entrance to a house prior to entering as a guest.  Despite this practice, a small twin edged-dagger concealed under the armpit, combined with a smaller knife, (‘sgian-dubh’), concealed in the hose or boot, would offer an element of defence or of surprise if employed in attack.

Various alternative spellings are found in English, including “skene-dhu” and “skean-dhu”.  The sgian-dubh may have evolved from the sgian-achlais, a dagger that could be concealed under the armpit. Used by the Scots of the 17th and 18th centuries, this knife was slightly larger than the average modern sgian-dubh and was carried in the upper sleeve or lining of the body of the jacket.

Courtesy and etiquette would demand that when entering the home of a friend, any concealed weapons would be revealed. It follows that the sgian-achlais would be removed from its hiding-place and displayed in the stocking top held securely by the garters.  Traditionally the scabbard is made of leather reinforced with wood and fitted with mounts of silver or some other metal which may be cast or engraved with designs ranging from Scottish thistles, Celtic knotwork, or heraldic elements such as a crest. While this makes for more popular and expensive knives, the sheath is hidden from view in the stocking while the sgian-dubh is worn. The sheaths of many modern sgian-dubhs are made of plastic mounted with less expensive metal fittings.

Condition of the Skean Dhu

In excellent condition throughout.

Specifications of the Skean Dhu

Blade length is 3.5 inches (7 inches overall).

German C.1700 Silver Staghorn Hunting Sword

german-1700-staghorn-hunting-sword-3

A terrific German c.1700 staghorn and silver-mounted hunting sword, by-knife and scabbard

A very rare example of an early hunting sword that is complete with its original scabbard and by-knife.  Most hunting swords from this period are without scabbard and to find one with its original by-knife is virtually unheard of.  Comprises a staghorn hilt with solid silver quillon finials – the pommel top and quillon block are also mounted in silver.  The plain, unfullered blade is stamped with the running wolf mark used by the sword makers of Solingen, Germany.  The brown leather scabbard is also mounted in silver and includes a pocket with a staghorn and silver mounted by-knife.

Condition of the Hunting Sword

In good condition for its great age – some wear to the blade – otherwise in remarkably good shape.

Specifications of the Hunting Sword

Blade length is 16.5 inches (22 inches overall).

English C.1720 Dog-Head Naval Cutlass

english-1720-doghead-cutlass-2

An extremely rare English c.1720 Dog-Head Naval Cutlass

This is one of the earliest known English naval cutlasses to be issued to seaman of the Royal Navy and the design is based on contemporary swords found in the Dutch East Indies, most particularly indigenous Kastane type swords.  For more information on the history of these cutlasses, please see the excerpt and images below from Boarders Away, by William Gilkerson.  The cutlass hilt has a very distinctive dog-head pommel and grooved grip.  The blade is plain and with an armourer’s stamp (probably German) to both sides.  Both the hilt and blade are of large proportions and this is very much a fighting sword.

Condition of the Cutlass

In excellent condition throughout and with no damage or repairs.

Specifications of the Cutlass

Blade length is 29.5 inches (35 inches overall).

British 19th Century Land Transport Corps Gladius Sword

british-land-transport-gladius-sword-3

A Rare British c. 1850’s Land Transport Corps Sword

This gladius sword was a sword type during the 19th Century and was first adopted by the French Army and also carried by a number of other European armies – it was not particularly popular in the British Army and only used by this very small arm of the Army.   The first uniformed transport corps in the British Army was the Royal Waggoners, formed in 1794. It was not a success and was disbanded the following year. In 1799, the Royal Waggon Corps was formed; by August 1802, it had been renamed the Royal Waggon Train. This was reduced to only two troops in 1818 and finally disbanded in 1833.  A transport corps was not formed again until the Crimean War. In 1855, the Land Transport Corps was formed. This was renamed the Military Train the following year.  The sword is of smaller proportions than the sandard type found in Europe at time and is normally unmarked.  The hilt is made from brass and the blade is plain – is also complete with a leather and brass mounts.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition, with a very clean blade.  Scabbard with some wear.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 19 inches (23.5 inches overall).

British C.1780 Naval Officer Sword and Scabbard

english-1780-naval-sword-3

A scarce British c.1780 Naval Officer’s Sword and Scabbard

A good example of a short hanger type carried by English naval officers during the last quarter of the 18th Century.  The hilt is brass, with a typical fluted shell guard and bone grip.  The pommel is faceted and with a domed top.  The blade is plain and single-fullered.  Complete with original leather scabbard and brass frog loop.  This is an interesting piece and the relative plainness of the sword might also indicate use by a lower rank.

Condition of the Sword

Hilt in excellent shape – blade with staining.  The scabbard is missing its chape.

Tibetan Bronze 19th Century Kartika Ceremonial Dagger

tibetan-kartika-dagger-1

Unusual and scarce Tibetan 19th Century Tibetan Kartika

A good example of a bronze Tibetan Kartika ceremonial knife.  A kartika is a small, symbolic crescent knife or ‘chopper’, used in Vajrayana Buddhist ceremonies and it symbolizes the severance of all material and worldly bonds and is crowned with a vajra, which is said to destroy ignorance, and leads to enlightenment. The kartika is a key ritual implement in the Tibetan Buddhist practice of Chöd, or ‘cutting through demons’. In Buddhist teachings, this tool is held in the right hand of Yama, the conqueror of death. It is also used in Feng Shui.  The heavy bronze dagger has crisp detailing.

WW1 or 1920’s Polish Legion Army NCO’s Cap

polish-military-cap-1

A very interesting and unsual Polish WW1 or 1920’s Army Polish Legion NCO’s Cap

Have not seen one like it before and and from the style of the cap would say that it is quite early.  Made from quality materials and quite “heavy”.  Includes a white metal Polish state eagle – is without the royal crown but I believe that pre-WWw variants were produced without them, particularly for the Polish Legion.  I would guess that the cap was worn by an NCO.  There is a maker’s/retailer’s label inside the cap.

Condition of the Cap

In generally good condition with some wear in places.

British C.1900’s Indian Police Officer Dress Sword

british-indian-police-sword-3

These swords are quite uncommon and were carried by British police officers whilst serving in India.  They are identical to British Army patterns except that in place of the usual royal cypher, there is inserted the intertwined letters, “IP”(Indian Police).  The hilt is nickel-plated steel with fishskin and silver twistwire to the grip and also retains the original leather sword knot.  The blade is retailer marked to Silver and Co. of London and I would date this to the first quarter of the 20th Century.  The blade is etched with the royal crown and India Police initials.  Complete with leather field service scabbard.
