A good example of a British Victorian 1831 Pattern General and Staff Officer’s Mameluke

With an ivory grip secured by brass rivets and comprising a cast brass crossguard featuring the crossed batons of a General officer.  Forte with the retailer’s name of Starkey and Co., Saville Row, London.  They were known to have been in operation from 1835.  The blade is etched with crossed batons, royal crown, cypher and scrolled floral decoration.  No scabbard.

Condition of the Mameluke

In good overall condition with crisp etching to the blade – a little staining.

A good quality example of a German early 19th Century hunting sword.  With heavy staghorn grip secured by brass rivets.  Gilt brass hilt and scabbard mounts.  With a wide double-edged blade and stylised lettering to the forte.    Complete with its original scabbard and leather frog.

In good condition with only light wear to the blade.  Missing by-knife – quite common.

A scarce and early Japanese Model 1886 Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

Of typical regulation military form and with a steel an incised, wooden gripped hilt.  The plain, heavy blade has matching issue numbers to the forte and the scabbard drag.  Complete with the original leather sword knot.  These Imperial Japanese cavalry troopers’ swords are becoming increasingly difficult to source and there are many later Chinese military issue/copies in the market.

In good condition and with a very clean blade – service wear to the hilt.

A well decorated and brass-hilted decorative rapier that was probably manufactured towards the end of the 19th Century.  Featuring classical figures and foliage.  Brass twistwire to the grip.  Complete with leather and brass mounted scabbard.

Excellent 19th Century Two-handed Broadsword

A very good example of 19th Century Broadsword – most likely made for display in a large baronial house and of good quality.  With a wrought iron hilt comprising two guard rings and long quillons.  There are also two downward curving quillons.  It also has a large rounded pommel surmounted with a prominent tang button.  The long wooden grip is wrapped in leather.  The blade is plain with a rounded tip.  The broadsword comes complete with a leather and iron mounted scabbard.  This impressive and large sword would make a great display piece.

Condition of the Broadsword

In very good condition with a nice age patina to the metal parts.  A few light nicks to the blade.

A very fine and attractive French c.1800’s Senior Officer’s Smallsword

With a gilt brass hilt featuring high quality detailing, including neo-classical figure, stands of arms and opposing lion heads to each side of the hilt guard.  The pommel displays a classical warrior in profile.  The triangular blade retains its original blue and gilt finish and includes martial trophies and floral motifs.  The mother of pearl grip is original.

In fine condition, especially the hilt and grip – blue and gilt to the blade has faded.

A highly interesting and unusual French Napoleonic Ceremonial Glaive Sword

This is a very rare and unusual French c.1800’s sword and is of a type that was carried by senior officers and nobility.  I have not been able to trace this particular design but there are some similar examples in Les Epees Portes en France Des Origines a Nos Jours by Jean L’Hoste (page 458) – see images below.

The sword comprises a gilt brass, cruciform hilt with applied decoration of bound lightning rods and floral motifs.  The plain, single-fullered blade is inscribed with “ANXII”- not sure if this is contemporary or added later.

Condition of the Sword

In excellent condition with much original gilt remaining to the hilt – blade is clean with only the lightest of speckling in places.

Terrific French Napoleonic Senior Infantry Officer’s Smallsword

A very fine French Napoleonic Senior Officer’s Sword with solid silver hilt and mother of pearl grip.  Has a detailed silver guard with stylised scene and knight’s-head pommel.  Hollow-ground blade with engraved motifs.  Complete with original scabbard.  For more details of this type of sword see Les Epees Portes en France Des Origines a Nos Jours by Jean L’Hoste (page 378).

Condition of the Smallsword

Hilt in excellent condition and blade with little wear.  Scabbard with old repair.  Quillon has been removed but looks to have been a contemporary change.

A very interesting and unusual c.1790 English Smallsword, probably by Matthew Boulton

Here is a fine example of an English 18th Century smallsword that is of a type manufactured by the famous Birmingham-based sword maker and designer, Matthew Boulton.  This man had an enormous influence on design during the late-18th Century and was a partner with the Scottish engineer, James Watt.  He was also a member of the famous Lunar society, whose members included Erasmus Darwin, Josiah Wedgewood and Joseph Priestley.  For more information about his life please go to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Boulton.  See below for examples of the type of hilt styles produced by Matthew Boulton and compare with this smallsword – it is very likely that this is a smallsword produced in the workshop of Matthew Boulton.

The sword has a very fine and delicate steel hilt that comprises a series of intricate, intertwined designs to the bowl and knucklebow.  The grip is bound with iron twistwire.  The hollow ground blade is engraved with motifs of scrolling foliage.

In excellent condition with a very fine, dark age patina to the hilt.

A completely mint example of a French Napoleonic Cavalry Officer’s Sword.  With a very attractive neo-classical brass hilt and chequered ebony grip – also includes the original sword knot.  The blade retains all the original blue and gilt decoration and the rest of the blade retains all original polish.  Blade decoration includes martial trophies, victory wreaths, suns and moons and floral motifs.  Complete with its original brass scabbard.

Rare and very early North African Arabic Nimcha Saif Sword

Most Nimchas date from the 18th-20th Century but this is a distinctive form of Nimcha known as the “Zanzibar” hilt.  This Nimcha has a superb quality blade either in imitation or taken from a 17th Century European sword – the fine tempering and workmanship on the blade makes me think that it is probably a European blade mounted on a North African hilt.  It is deeply engraved “IHS” within the fullers to both sides.  The hilt is wood and features a very fine cut steel knucklebow.

Condition of the Nimcha

In excellent condition for its great age with a fine polished blade.

A superb and completely unique c.1900 Sri-Lankan solid silver Kastane Sword

Here is a unique opportunity to acquire a presentation kastane of exceptional quality and design.  It was presented to Mudaliyar B.P. Amerasinghe and from initial and limited research it appears he was the father of a notable Sri-Lankan peacemaker, Terence Percivel Amerasinghe – for more information go to: https://sundaytimes.lk/070708/Plus/pls8.html

The kastane has extensive decoration in solid silver and is very heavy, indicating a great amount of silver used in its construction.  The dragon-head pommel appears to be inset with ruby eyes.  Is complete with its filligree scabbard.  The blade is plain and typical of kastane swords.  It also comes with a heavy silver linked chain and ball – assume that it is attached to the scabbard and worn as a fitting.

In exceptional condition and with no damage or repairs – slight wear to the inscription.

A superb example of a 19th Century Ottoman Turkish Yataghan Sword

This yataghan sword is of large proportions, particularly the hilt that has exceptionally large “ears”.  The hilt is made from walrus ivory and in excellent condition.  The backstrap is decorated with gilt filligree decorations and inset with remaining semi-precious stones.  The blade is engraved with script and a star.  It has not been translated but normally includes a date and dedication.

Condition of the Yataghan

The sword is in fine condition and the blade is exceptionally clean with no pitting or staining – still very sharp.

A fine c.1800’s Indo-Persian Hammer War Axe

A scarce example with inlaid silver decoration comprising opposing tigers and floral decoration to the blade.  With flattened anvil-shaped hammer to rear.  This gave the soldier the option of both cutting and smashing an opponent.  Steel haft with bulbous finial.
