English C.1780 Infantry Officer Hanger Sword

english-1780-infantry-hanger-sword-2

Attractive and fine example of a c.1780 English infantry officer’s hanger sword

This type of sword was carried by English officers throughout the American Revolutionary Wars and is heavily featured in Neumann’s seminal work on the swords of this period -Swords and Blades of the American Revolution. The sword has a typical steel slotted hilt, long, fluted pommel and stained green horn grip. The slightly curved blade is double-fullered and has a good age patina.

Condition of the Sword

Overall condition is excellent with only an age crack to the horn grip that is quite usual for these pieces.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 24 inches (30.5 inches overall).

C.1880 Afghan Army Military Sword and Scabbard

turkish-19th-century-sword-3

Highly unusual and rare c.1890 Afghani Military Sword

Am not certain about which branch of the army carried this model of sword but am currently trying to identify. In excellent condition and of high quality manufacture. With unusual steel, stirrup-type shape with slotted knucklebow. Wooden grips with high ferrule. Blade is of top quality steel with quill point. Blade forte is deeply stamped with the royal coat of arms of King Abdur Rahman Khan (c.1840’s-1890), one of the most famous of Afghan kings and a figure involved in many military campaigns and political/family intrigues during a long reign that included a period of exile before he became king.  Complete with its original steel and leather mounted scabbard. A unique piece and unlikely to be encountered again.

Condition of the Sword

Excellent condition and with a very clean blade – both scabbard and blade a good fit.

Complete with its original steel and leather mounted scabbard. A unique piece and unlikely to be encountered again.

British 1822 Pattern Infantry NCO Sword

british-1822-pattern-nco-sword-3

Scarce and early British George IV (1820-1830) 1822 Pattern NCO’s Sword

One of the earliest that I have come across and actually does not strictly conform to the pattern as it is lacking a folding guard – this highlights the loose adherence to this pattern in the early days. Hilt of brass, Gothic style – all original fishskin and brass twistwire to the grip. Plain blade maker/retailer marked to Hebbert and Hume of London.

Condition of the Sword

Blade with a dark age patina. Complete with original leather and brass mounted scabbard.

English C.1750 Heavy Cavalry Horseman Broadsword

british-1750-cavalry-sword-2

Rare and original English c.1750 Horseman’s Broadsword

A virtually identical example can be found in Swords and Blades of the American Revolution by Neumann, page 150.  Neumann states that this type of sword was know as an “Irish Hilt” as it was carried by English regiments in Ireland. Has a large cage hilt with leather wrap to the grip and a massive, double-edged, broadsword blade that is likely to be earlier, possibly 17th Century. It is faintly marked with stars and lettering within the fullers.  The massive blade of this sword would have meant that it was devastating when used as a slashing and cutting weapon, particularly on horseback and at speed.

Condition of the Broadsword

Condition is excellent for its age – blade is very clean indeed.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 33 inches (39 inches overall). A terrific early English cavalry trooper’s sword that was meant for heavy combat in the field.

C.1700 Turkish Georgian Caucasian Yataghan Sword

georgian-turkish-yataghan-2

A very early example of a c.1700 Turkish Georgian Caucasian Yataghan Sword.  This is a particular eastern sword type and comprises a simple black horn grip and typical yataghan-styled flared ears to the pommel. The blade is heavily reinforced.  Decoration to the curved blade is complex and elaborate and includes inlaid brass roundels, flowers, jagged points, script and fantastical shapes.  This sword has a very fine balance and would have been very effective as a slashing combat weapon, especially whilst on horseback.  They were carried throughout Turkey and the Balkans and also in Russian Caucasia.  The quality of the blade manufacture was highly prized in these cultures and much effort was always directed by the swordsmith in producing a blade that was both flexible and strong.

Early Yataghan swords rare in the market

These early examples are rarely seen in the market and this is a fine yataghan in excellent condition for its great age with commensurate wear to the blade.  Blade length is 24 inches (29 inches overall).

The kukri (alternatively spelled khukri or khukuri) is a curved Nepalese knife, similar to the machete, used as both a tool and as a weapon. It is a traditional weapon for Nepalese people, and also a weapon of choice/side arm for all Nepalese including those serving in different armies around the world.  The cutting edge is inwardly curved in shape and is the icon of Nepal. It was, and in many cases still is, the basic and traditional utility knife of the Nepalese people. Very effective when used as a weapon, it is a symbolic weapon of the Nepalese Army, and of all Gurkha regiments throughout the world, signifying the courage and valor of the bearer in the battlefield. It is a part of the regimental weaponry and heraldry of the Royal Gurkha Rifles, and is used in many traditional rituals among different ethnic groups of Nepal, including one where the groom has to wear it during the wedding ceremony. It is known to many people as simply the “Gurkha blade” or “Gurkha knife”.  The pronunciation “kukri” is of western origin, the Nepalese people to whom this weapon belongs pronounce it as “khukuri.”
