British C.1820 Regimental Band Sword – Grenadier Guards

1820-grenadier-guard-band-sword-3

A Rare British c.1820 Regimental Band Sword – Grenadier Guards

A good and scarce example of a c.1820 British regimental band sword for either the Grenadier Guards or a Fusilier regiment. With cast brass quatrefoil hilt and flaming grenade in the ecusson. Plain blade. This British c.1820 regimental band sword is complete with its original scabbard.  Many regiments in the British Army adopted individual patterns for their bandsmen during the 19th Century and by the middle of the century, a myriad of styles were present, including pommels of lionshead, eaglehead, crowned, trefoil and plain.  Most British band swords were of short length and longer examples, including this piece, are scarce.  In 1856, the British Army introuduced a universal pattern for both drummers and buglers, and this was updated in 1895.

Condition of the Sword

Blade and hilt in good shape – solid and with no movement.  Period repair to the scabbard.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 25.5 inches (30.5 inches overall).

British Victorian C.1850 Military Band Sword

britbandvict3

Unusual and possibly unique British Victorian c.1850 Military Band Sword

With brass cuciform hilt and bone grip, this British Victorian c.1850 Military Band Sword.  It has a plain blade and is complete with leather and brass mounted scabbard. Unusual piece and probably for a volunteer regiment.  This example is likely to be for a volunteer band – probably a local militia.  During this period, many regular army regiments and volunteer battalions carried their own individual style of band sword and it was only in 1856, when an official pattern of band sword for drummers and buglers (with trefoil hilt) was introduced.  This was superceded in 1895 with a new design.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition and with with some age staining to the blade.

English 17th Century Hunting Naval Officer’s Sword

A Fine and Scarce English 17th Century Hunting Naval Officer’s Sword

With deep decoration to the shell guard and distinctive ribbed pommel, this English 17th Century Hunting Naval Officer’s Sword, has a staghorn grip and the blade is heavily impressed with a King’s-head mark usually associated with the Wundes sword making family of Solingen, Germany. These staghorn hangers were carried by huntsman but also became extremely popular with English naval officers of the late-18th and early 19th Century.  This was due to its short length that enabled the officer to use the sword effectively within the cramped confines of a ship’s deck.

English 1690 Naval Infantry Officer’s Sword

british-1690-hanger-sword-2

A superb and unique example of an English 1690 Naval Infantry Officer’s Sword

This English 1690 Naval Infantry Officer’s Sword is of a type carried during the late-17th Century. It is of exceptional quality and very well balanced in the hand.  With brass shell guard hilt and polished hardwood grip. The pommel has a flattened brass profile with a pronounced ball tang button.  The blade forte is engraved with the date 1690 and “WG” – it is assumed that this is the maker’s initials – unlikely to be the owner. Reverse of the blade forte has a deeply impressed armourer’s mark.  The exceptionally long and slightly curved blade is swolen towards the point and would have made a very effective fighting sword both on board the deck of a warship but also in the melee of land-based combat.  It is very rare to see swords of this period dated to the hilt or blade and I have never encountered a similar example of this sword type and it is likey that a very small number were produced.

Condition of the Sword

The long, curved and bulbous blade is in excellent condition and with a pleasant grey age patina.  Hilt is in superb shape and so is the grip.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 30 inches (36 inches overall).

Rare and Superb English 17th Century Staghorn Hunting Sword.  With superb staghorn grip and iron hilt mounts. With king’s-head maker’s stamp to the blade, probably indicating a German manufactured sword blade.  This blade mark was commonly used by the Solingen-based Wundes family of blade makers. The use of German blades on English swords of this period was very common. The hilt ferrule has neo-classical and royal profiles to each side.

Condition of the hunting sword

The condition of this hunting sword is superb throughout and it has a great age patina – both blade and hilt have never been cleaned. No looseness to grip – rock solid.  A delightful and rare piece for the collector of early antique swords.  Blade length is 18 inches (23 inches overall).
