German European 19th Century Cuirassier Officer’s Sword

cuirassier-officers-sword-2

A scarce German European 19th Century Cuirassier Officer’s Sword with distinctive canted brass pommel particularly associated with German and Russian cuirassier swords of the period.  Cannot be certain of the exact country of origin but know that Germany favoured this hilt style for their cuirassier officers and they carried these swords during the 19th an early 20th centuries.  The grip is bound with leather and copper twistwire.

Sword blade with “CAST STEEL” stamped to the forte

The blade is quite interesting as it has a deeply impressed mark – “CAST STEEL” near to the blade forte.  Would be surprised if this is a British made blade but the term might be generic as in the case of Eisenhauer on German swords, signifying a quality blade.  This blade is double-fullered and with a clip point.  There is no scabbard.  Condition of the sword is good with a dark patina to the blade.  Blade length is 33 inches (39 inches overall).

British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer’s Sword

british-1796-pattern-light-cavalry-officers-sword-2

A very good example of a British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer’s Sword of a type carried by British mounted troops throughout the Napoleonic Wars.  This is the classic steel stirrup-hilted, light cavalry sword made famous by Major Gaspar Le Marchant of the British Army, who was the force behind its introduction in 1796.  It comprises a leather and silver twistwire grip in excellent condition (rarely encountered) and an etched, hatchet point blade.

Etching on blade includes royal coat of arms and “GR” cypher

The etching, now faded, includes the British royal coat of arms, royal “GR” cypher for King George II and scrolling foliage.  Blade in sound condition.  No scabbard but if you can find one, then you have a fine and complete British Napoleonic officer’s sword.   Blade length is 32 inches (38.5 inches overall).

US WW2 True Temper Military Machete and Scabbard

us-ww2-miitary-machete-3

free-shipping-1

A good example of a US WW2 True Temper Military Machete and Scabbard.  With distinctive black composite riveted grip.  The blade is deeply stamped with the following words – “True Temper TT 18 B 1943” and a “US” to the side.  It retains much of the original blueing to the blade and comes complete with its original and scarce brown leather scabbard.  These swords were issued to regular US Army soldiers and also US Navy Marines and were used throughout the fighting in the Pacific War.

Early WW2 leather scabbard

Most scabbards encountered in the market tend to be made from canvas or some kind of composite material so I would guess that this is an early war example.  Leather scabbard with some scored numbering – soldier’s number?  Blade length is 18 inches (23  inches overall).

Irish Nationalist 1916 Easter Rising Veteran’s 1935 Armband

irish-1916-easter-rising-armband-1

An original and super rare Irish Nationalist 1916 Easter Rising veteran’s 1935 armband.  It  was the first official “decoration” given to veterans of the 1916 Rebellion and was awarded at a ceremony held at the Rotunda Rink, Dublin, on Sunday 21 April 1935 to mark the 19th Anniversary of the Rebellion. This armband was worn by Volunteer veterans with their civilian attire on special ceremonial occasions, prior to the introduction of the famous 1916 Active Service Medal.

Very few Irish 1916 Easter Rising armbands in existence

As there were only 2,439 1916 Active Service Medals issued and these are extremely rare and valuable (also currently copied) to the collector, the number of these armbands in existence has got to be quite small – very few will have survived over the years – especially so in this excellent condition.  Cannot be faulted.  Dimensions are 7.5 inches x 4.5 inches.

British WW2 Wilkinson 3rd Pattern Commando Dagger

british-wilkinson-3rd-pattern-commando-knife-3

An extremely rare British WW2 Wilkinson 3rd Pattern Commando Dagger.  Although the 3rd pattern is not uncommon, very few are found with a maker’s name of Wilkinson to the blade forte.  With ribbed zinc-alloy grip.  This was the final pattern of British commando knives and was introduced partly as a result of economies towards the end of the war (1943-1945).  The ribbed grip was also a good design improvement as it allowed better grip and purchase when holding in the hand.

Wilkinson maker’s name to blade forte

The double-edged blade has the  remains of a Wilkinson maker’s name to the forte.  In good overall condition – most original blueing remains to the crossguard and scabbard chape – elasticated band a little loose.  Blade length is 7 inches (11.5 inches overall).

 british-ww2-raf-officers-gauntlets-1

A very fine and original British WW2 Royal Air Force Officer’s Leather Gauntlets.  This is the 1941 pattern.  Zip fastener openings in full working order – these enabled the pilot to easily open and access his gloves.    They were intended to be worn over silk or rayon glove liners.  With Air Ministry stamps to inside of each gauntlet – the interior is stamped “AM” under crown, serial number and size – 9 and a half.  Condition is very good with only light service wear – the leather is still supple and with a good tan colour.

WW1 Imperial German Officer’s Eagle-head Trench Knife

imperial-german-trench-knife-3

free-shipping-1

A rare and complete WW1 Imperial German Officer’s Eagle-head Trench Knife.  With eagle-head pommel and black, finely chequered composite vulcanised grip and original scabbard. This type of military trench knife was popular particularly towards the end of the war when trench fighting required an effective small knife.  A myriad of private blade making companies (many based in Solingen), were at the forefront of producing these trench knives and they came in a variety of styles and sizes.  This example is quite typical of the German eagle-head type.

Privately purchased WW1 Imperial German Officer’s Eagle-head trench knife

Cut-down bayonets were used by ordinary soldiers but these knives were privately purchased, most particularly for officers and are normally of a very high standard.  This is such an example and the design is based on German military short bayonets of the period.  Condition of the knife is very good with some light wear to the blade.  Appears to have retained its original darkened finish to the hilt.  Scabbard is painted black.  Remains of the leather belt strap to back of scabbard.  Blade length is 6 inches (10.5 inches overall).

English C.1720 Brass-hilted Smallsword

english-1720-smallsword-2

A good, early example of an English c.1720 brass-hilted smallsword with distinctive double-edged blade.  The brass hilt has a pronounced oval and faceted pommel.  The grip is bound with thick copper twistwire.  The knucklebow is D-shaped and slightly swollen in the middle.  The ribbed double shell guards are small and very indicative of smallsword styles prevalent during the first quarter of the eighteenth Century, particularly in England.  These early examples of the smallsword form are actually quite rare, particularly with this type of blade and few original pieces exist. It was common for only a brief period and new hilt and blade designs superseded it after the mid-eighteenth century.

Condition of the Smallsword

The condition of the sword is very good for its great age with a nice honey coloured patina to the brass hilt.  Some appropriate age wear to the blade – the twistwire is slightly loose.  Blade length is 33 inches (40 inches overall).

C.1790’s French Napoleonic Lions-Head Infantryman’s Short Sword

french-napoleonic-infantry-sword-3

A very rare c.1790’s French Napoleonic Lions-Head Infantryman’s Short Sword.  With distinctive lions-head pommel and heavy cast brass hilt with lions mane decoration to its length.  The grip is secured with domed brass rivets.  The leaf-shaped blade is stamped with a maker’s mark and there is a stamp to the top of the crossguard.  The stamp comprises the letters M and R.  This relates to the de Cabannes swordmakers and this mark is dated to 1791 (see pictures below). Is an interesting piece and I assume that it would have been carried by a particular branch of service – perhaps artillery?

C.1790’s French Napoleonic Lions-Head Infantryman’s Short Sword complete with original scabbard

The blade is also engraved with a series of unknown letters near the forte.  The sword comes complete with its original leather and brass mounted scabbard.  The blade has some age and service wear and the scabbard brass mounts is mis-shapen to the chape.

Chinese 19th Century Jian Sword and Scabbard

chinese-antique-jian-3

An original and good example of an antique Chinese 19th Century Jian Sword and scabbard.  The sword comprises a ribbed hardwood grip and rounded brass pommel, ferrule and fluted brass crossguard.  The grip retains a hole for a sword tassel (usually red) and there is a copper washer beneath the brass crossguard..  The double-edged blade has a raised median edge in the middle and has a number of decorative inset copper discs – this is a common design motif on antique Chinese Jian swords.  Many of these swords were carried by Chinese nobility throughout the 19th Century.

Chinese Jian sword with brass scabbard mounts

The original scabbard is made from polished lacquer and steel  wire with three decorative brass mounts.  The overall condition of the sword is very good for its great age – one ring is missing from the scabbard mounts. Blade length is 20 inches (26 inches overall).  There are many modern copies of these antique Jian swords in the market today but this is a genuine example and would make a great addition to any collection of antique Chinese swords.
