Spanish C.1780 Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Cup Hilt Sword

spanish-1780-cavalry-sword-2

A fine Spanish C.1780 Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Cup Hilt Sword

This is a large Spanish C.1780 Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Cup Hilt Sword with gilt brass and engraved cup hilt.  The grip is bound with silver twistwire and there is a large rounded pommel that is typical of the mid-late 18th Century.  The blade is quite impressive and likely to be c.1700’s as it was common for Spanish swords to be re-hilted with earlier, quality blades.  Blade has numerous armourer’s marks and stampings and is quite unusual profile having a stepped forte and sharply tapering point.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition – some wear to blade commensurate with its age.  Some loss of gilding to the cup hilt.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 35.5 inches (43 inches overall).

british-second-pattern-commando-knife-3

A fine and unique British WW2 Named 2nd Pattern Commando Knife Dagger

This WW2 2nd Pattern British Commando Knife was owned by Lieutenant (eventually Lieutenant Colonel) William Henry Dale of the Royal Engineers.  I purchased his dagger, painting, notebooks etc from a local source so they have never been in the market.  The dagger is of the rare, unmarked variety and is in terrific condition.  The scabbard is also original and has the initials HWD scratched onto the leather.  NOTE: buyer wil receive the dagger + notebooks/documents and painting – all items are included in the sale price.

Condition of the Dagger

In terrific, minty condition with just about all original blueing to the hilt and blade – also blueing to the scabbard chape.  Small dent to chape.  Elastic strap broken to scabbard.

British 1804 Pattern Naval Cutlass

british-1804-pattern-naval-cutlass-2

British 1804 Pattern Naval Cutlass

An original and fine example of a British 1804 Pattern Naval Cutlass.  This is a scarce sword and rarely found with such clear markings.  It comprises a typical figure-of-eight iron hilt and ribbed iron grip.  The blade is unfullered and spear-pointed with a deep stamp of the royal cypher of King George III – GR – and crown above.  This pattern of cutlass was carried by British naval seaman throughout the Napoleonic Wars and is the archetypal style associated with this period.  Few examples have survived as they were normally endured a hard service life and were discarded when unfit for use.

Condition of the Cutlass

In good overall condition with appropriate age and service wear.

Imperial Russian Napoleonic Military Mitre Helmet

imperial-russian-military-mitre-helmet-1

Imperial Russian Napoleonic Military Mitre Helmet

A very interesting and unusual Imperial Russian Napoleonic military mitre helmet.  Cannot say a lot about it is as I am not familiar with this type of item and haven’t encountered one before.  Comprises a red fabric shell mounted with a large stamped brass helmet plate that is of a type worn by Russian grenadiers during the late 18th and early 19th Century. The helmet plate is also held togeither by a series of brass straps.  There is a fabric liner that has a faded stamp – can’t make out the lettering but think that it is Russian Cyrillic.  Unusual piece.

Polish Hungarian 18th Century Koncerz Cavalry Sword

polish-hungarian-koncerz-sword-2

Polish Hungarian 18th Century Koncerz Cavalry Sword

This is an extremely rare Polish Hungarian 18th Century Koncerz Cavalry Sword that would have been carried by troopers in the first half of the eighteenth century.  This example is of typical form and comprises a plain stirrup hilt with rounded pommel.  The grip is covered in leather and bound with brass twistwire.  The distinctive feature of these swords is the very narrow and long blade that was used as a kind of thrusting short lance or spear.  This example has had the blade cut down and so lost part of its length but would originally have been considerably longer.  Because of the very narrow blade it is probably inevitable that it would be prone to breakages and consequently, few will have ever survived and the only existing examples appear to be in Eastern European military museums.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition with appropriate wear to both the hilt and blade – as mentioned before – part of the blade length has been lost.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 28 inches (33 inches overall).

British 1796 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Trooper’s Sword – F Troop Scots Greys – Waterloo

British 1796 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Trooper’s Sword – F Troop Scots Greys – Waterloo

Here is a unique and historic British 1796 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Trooper’s Sword carried by a trooper from F Troop, the Scots Greys, a regiment that became famous at the battle of Waterloo when Sergeant Ewart of F Troop, won the French eagle.

Here is a description of how Sergeant Ewart of F Troop won the eagle:

At Waterloo, the Greys were part of the Union Brigade, a formation of heavy cavalry regiments held in reserve by Wellington. In the line of battle, General Thomas Picton’s 5th Division was held in reserve, on the right of the Allied line, behind the Dutch-Belgian 2nd Division. The 5th contained a number of experienced veteran units from the Peninsular War, including the 92nd Foot (Gordon Highlanders).

After a heavy exchange of fire, the Belgians were forced to fall back to the far side of the ridge on which they were stationed, and the 5th Division moved forward over the crest of the ridge to hold the line. After the heavy exchange of fire continued, with the 5th holding firm, it was decided that the division should charge to break up the French columns; the cavalry held in reserve were brought forward, and passed through the ranks of the infantry and into action.

At this point, the Gordon Highlanders were exchanging fire with the 1st Battalion of the 45th, which was deploying around thirty yards to their front. The Greys quickly and unexpectedly passed through the infantry, moved forward the short distance between the lines, and broke through to the centre of the French infantry as it was forming into a defensive line. In the confusion that followed, the 45th was effectively broken as an organised unit, and the eagle it carried was quickly seized by Sergeant Ewart, in close fighting with a number of Frenchmen.

“One made a thrust at my groin, I parried him off and cut him down through the head. A lancer came at me – I threw the lance off by my right side and cut him through the chin and upwards through the teeth. Next, a foot soldier fired at me and then charged me with his bayonet, which I also had the good luck to parry, and then I cut him down through the head”.

To prevent it being recaptured, he was ordered to take it to safety; he did, but paused for some time overlooking the battlefield before finally carrying the trophy to Brussels. Whilst the brigade had not taken significant losses, they were disorganised, and carried forward to attack French artillery; charged by French cavalry in turn, they took heavy losses, and played no further part in the battle.

This sword came out of a house in Edinburgh and appears to have been untouched since the battle!  It is of standard 1796 pattern with langets removed but retaining its original hatchet point – many of these swords had their blades made into spear points.  Is engraved to the knucklebow – 2 Ds F No 20.

It goes without saying that this is a very historic and important sword and with restoration could be the centrepiece and talking point of any British Napoleonic collection.  A similar sword from F Troop was sold in England not long ago for £5000.00 and that example came without a scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

Important Note:  In need of comprehensive restoration, particularly the grip – little loose but a professional restoration of the grip would transform this sword.  Blade hilt and scabbard need cleaning but they should clean up well.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 34.75 inches (40.5 inches overall).
