C.1800 North Indian Ram’s Head Short Sword

indian-1800-ramshead-short-sword-2

A fine and unusual C.1800 North Indian Ram’s Head Short Sword with two-piece, cast brass decorative hilt and curved, clip point, double-edged blade.  The crossguard has a distinctive downswept profile.  Is of a type carried both in Persia and Northern India from the 18th through to the 19th Century.  The brass hilt would have been manufactured in two pieces and welded together – a seam line can be seen along the top and bottom of the grip backstrap.

Effective close-quarter edged weapon

The dagger would have been very effective as a close-quarter, slashing weapon. The detail to the ram’s head pommel is very good. In good overall condition with some consequent age peppering and wear to the blade.  Blade length is 17 inches (22 inches overall).  It is interesting to note that in recent years this style of Indian dagger has been reproduced so buyers need to be aware of what is out there in the market – this  dagger is 100% authentic.

French C.1800’s Napoleonic Naval Officer’s Dirk

french-napoleonic-naval-dirk-3

A rare French C.1800’s Napoleonic Naval Officer’s Dirk

This is a scarce and rare French C.1800’s Napoleonic Naval Officer’s Dirk.  The dirk comprises a polished steel hilt with finely chequered ebony grip and single-fullered blade.  It comes complete with its original leather and steel mounted scabbard.  I have listed it as French because they tended to carry naval dirks with black ebony grips as opposed to British naval dirks of this period that invariably had grips made from either ivory or bone.  It is certainly an unusual piece and worthy of further research.

Condition of the Dirk

In very good overall condition with light wear to the scabbard.

19th Century Boy’s Sword

19th-century-boys-sword-3

An original 19th Century Boy’s Sword.  The carrying of boys’ swords was particularly popular during the 19th Century and many sons of military officers carried the type of sword of their officer father.  Contemporary photographs and paintings highlight this vogue.

Brass D-Guard hilt and complete with original scabbard

This is a 19th Century Boy’s Sword with brass D-Guard hilt and leather and brass twistwire to the grip.  The blade is slightly curved and with a rounded point.  In overall worn condition – part of backstrap missing – dents to scabbard.  Blade length is 19 inches (22 inches overall).

C.1900 Boxer Rebellion Period Brass Oriental Head Decorative Dish

C.1900 Boxer Rebellion Period Brass Oriental Head Decorative Dish

A C.1900 Boxer Rebellion Period Brass Oriental Head Decorative Dish.  Highly unusual and probably unique c.1900 brass dish in the form of an Oriental man’s head.  I would suspect that this dish was made during the time of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 when European troops and legations were attacked in Peking.  There was a vogue for oriental style items and this might be some kind of caricature.  A heavy piece and finely detailed.

Condition of the Dish

C.1780’s British Army Scottish/English Infantry Officer’s Sword

scottish-english-1780-infantry-officers-sword-2

A highly unusual C.1780’s British Army Scottish/English Infantry Officer’s Sword.  This C.1780’s British Army Scottish/English Infantry Officer’s Sword is highly unusual and quite rare.  I have only seen one similar example before and it had a thistle motif inset into the forward guard.  This makes me think that it is likely to be Scottish in origin as most English infantry officers (particularly after the introduction of the 1786 Pattern) tended to carry gilt brass-hilted infantry swords.

Swords of the British Army

In Swords of the British Army by Robson (page 174), he refers to the adoption of bead-hilted infantry dress swords by Highland infantry officers.  The use of cut steel hilts seems also to have been popular within Scottish regiments.  This example has a finely cut steel hilt and flattened pommel.  Retains all original fishskin and silver twistwire to the grip.  The blade is plain and of 1786 Pattern Infantry Officer’s type.  In fine condition – great dark and smooth age toning to the hilt.  Light staining to the blade.  Blade length is 32.5 inches (38 inches overall).

C.1800’s British Naval Type Officer’s Fighting Sword

british-1800-naval-officers-sword-2

A good C.1800’s British Naval Type Officer’s Fighting Sword

This is a fine example of a C.1800’s British Naval Officer’s Type Fighting Sword.  Although not engraved with any naval motifs (many British naval officers’ swords of the period were lacking in any naval designations to hilt or blade), the size of this sword probably indicates naval use as it would be too short for cavalry use and it not of a type commonly carried by British infantry officers of the period.  It is of typical stirrup-hilted cavalry officer’s form but smaller in proportions and so ideal for combat use aboard a crowded ship.  The hilt is gilt brass with a finely chequered ivory grip.  The blade is curved and multi-fullered.  I believe that it could actually be an earlier c.1700’s family blade mounted on a later hilt.  No scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In fine condition overall with great patina to the blade.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 28 inches (33 inches overall).

C.1750 Scottish Highlander’s Staghorn Dirk

scottish-18th-century-staghorn-dirk-2

A large and unique C.1750 Scottish Highlander’s Staghorn Dirk

A good and unusual example of a C.1750 Scottish Highlander’s Staghorn Dirk.  This is a substantial piece and comprises a staghorn grip with iron hilt mounts and typical Scottish dirk blade with notched grooves to the spine of the blade.  The blade is of large proportions and made for combat.  This style of knife was also used in Europe at this time but this example has all the hallmarks of a Scottish piece.  For a similar piece see Swords and Blades of the American Revolution – image below.

Condition of the Dirk

British 1788 Pattern Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

british-1788-pattern-light-cavalry-troopers-sword-2

An original and scarce British 1788 Pattern Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

The British 1788 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Sword is a pattern of sword that is rarely encountered and few have survived.  This is a particularly good example with typical fishskin grip but what makes this one different is that the hilt is made from brass rather than the normally encountered steel.  There are many variations of this pattern and this is one of them.  Blade is curved with a single, broad fuller.  No scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In good overall condition, with some light service wear to the blade.

An original British C.1800’s Yeomanry Cavalry Officer’s Sword

Here we have a British C.1800’s Yeomanry Cavalry Officer’s Sword complete with original scabbard.  This type of sword was carried by officers in British Yeomanry (militia) regiments during the Napoleonic Wars and comprises a ribbed ivory grip, brass twistwire and gilt brass stirrup hilt.  The hilt is stamped to the underside with the letters, FT.  It is likely that these letters stand for Francis Thurkle, a famous British sword maker.  Blade is plain and slightly curved.  Complete with original leather gilt brass mounted scabbard – chape missing.

Condition of the Sword

Chips and age crack to the hilt.  Blade in worn condition.  Scabbard leather worn and soft.  Chape missing.
