Massive Scottish 18th Century Two-Handed Lowland Broadsword

scottish-1700-two-handed-lowland-sword-2

A highly unusual and scarce Scottish Two-handed Lowland Broadsword

This is a fine sword of very large proportions and of high quality.  It is similar to the types of sword carried by Scottish Highland warriors during the 16th and 17th Century although I would probably date this example to later in the 18th Century.  One of the indicators is the type of pommel tang button design used on this example which is comparable to tang buttons found on Scottish Highland dirks of the 1700’s – I have added some images of Scottish dirks from this period that I have bought and sold in the past.  The sword has a large, rounded pommel and wide hilt quillons with rounded finials.  The blade is multi-fullered at the forte and leads to a single fuller that runs to just under half the length of the blade.  The grip is exceptionally long and made from oak.  Blade is finely tempered and would originally have been sharpened for most of its length.  The sword might also have been used for ceremonial or bearing purposes during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Condition of the Sword

In excellent condition for its age with a fine dark age patina to the hilt.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32.5 inches (52.75 inches overall).

Bavarian 19th Century Infantry NCO’s Sword

bavarian-19th-century-infantry-sword-3

Scarce and fine Bavarian 19th Century Infantry NCO’s Sword.  A good example with a brass hilt reminscent of the Austrian Model 1861 Infantry Sword.  All original fishskin and brass twistwire to the grip still remains.  Is regimentally marked and matching to both the underside of the hilt and the top of the scabbard.  Many Imperial German swords with regimental numbers tend to be mismatched and it is rare to find one with matching numbers and also to the one regiment rather than several regiments, during the swords long service life.  There are also official issue marks to both blade, hilt and scabbard.

Blade with etched Bavarian state motto

Blade is etched to both sides with the Bavarian state motto – In Treue Fest – Steadfast with Loyalty.  In good overall condition – scabbard throat missing.  Blade length is 32.5 inches (38 inches overall).
