British 1850 Royal Engineers Driver Sword

british-1850-royal-engineers-drivers-sword-2

A super rare British 1850 Royal Engineers Driver’s Sword

This is a scarce British regulation issue swords and rarely seen.  These swords were originally produced for trials by the Prussian Guard Hussar regiment in 1849-50 but were not adopted (they were subsequently issued with the Model 1852 Cavalry Trooper’s Sword) and the unwanted swords were sold in the Liege sword market where English Board of Ordnance inspectors no doubt saw a good deal and purchased the surplus swords for use by the Royal Engineers.  You can tell that they were issued to British forces because they feature two opposing broad arrows signifying that they would have been sold out of service when no longer required.  These swords were produced by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum  of Solingen.  Sword is dated to 1850 on the spine near the forte. For more information on this sword please go to:  Swords of the British Army – The Regulation Patterns 1788 to 1914, by Brian Robson, pages 237-238 – also see the images below for shots from the book.

Condition of the Sword

In good condition with overall wear to the hilt and blade – note – this is how most of these have been found.  No scabbard.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 34.75 inches (40 inches overall).

A good and complete example of a Gurkha military isssue Kukri

With a well made wood and metal banded handle and heavily chromed blade.  Leather scabbard that holds two original by-knives.

The kukri (alternatively spelled khukri or khukuri) is a curved Nepalese knife, similar to the machete, used as both a tool and as a weapon. It was, and in many cases still is, the basic and traditional utility knife of the Nepalese people. Very effective when used as a weapon, it is a symbolic weapon of the Nepalese Army, and of all Gurkha regiments throughout the world, signifying the courage and valor of the bearer in the battlefield. It is a part of the regimental weaponry and heraldry of the Royal Gurkha Rifles, and is used in many traditional rituals among different ethnic groups of Nepal, including one where the groom has to wear it during the wedding ceremony. It is known to many people as simply the “Gurkha blade” or “Gurkha knife”.  The pronunciation “kukri” is of western origin, the Nepalese people to whom this weapon belongs pronounce it as “khukuri.”

British 1821 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officer Sword – Named 2nd Dragoons DSO

1821-heavy-cavalry-wilkinson-21679-sword-3

An excellent and interesting British late-19th Century Heavy Cavalry Officer’s Sword

This sword was owned by an officer named George John Scott.  He purchased the sword from Wilkinson Sword in December 1876.  Here is  his service history:

Born 7 May 1858 – educated at Marlborough. He joined the Shropshire Militia in 1875; became Sub-Lieutenant.  Joined the 2nd Dragoon Guards in 1879.  Served with the 7th Dragoon Guards in Egypt, 1882 (Medal, with clasp for Tel-el-Kebir, and Khedive’s Star).  Exchanged into the 18th Hussars in 1885, and retired in 1889.

He served in the South African War, 1900-1, with the Imperial Yeomanry and was present at operations in the Transvaal and Cape Colony, March to November 1900.  Was mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette, 10 September 1901) and received the Queen’s Medal with two clasps.  Was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette, 27 September 1901).  His citation reads:

“George John Scott, Captain, 19th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa”.

He was invested by King Edward VII on the 29 October 1901. He also served in the City of London Yeomanry, 1901-13; and in the 3rd Middlesex Yeomanry, 1915—16 rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel G J Scott.

Sword has typical bowl guard with pierced, acanthus-leafed decoration.  All original fishskin and silver twistwire remain to the grip.  Owner’s initials to the blade and royal cypher and scrolling foliage.  Complete with original leather field service scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In excellent condition and with crisp etching to the blade.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 36 inches (42 inches overall).
