British 20th Century Martindale Machete Cutlass

martindale-short-machete-3

A good example of a British 20th Century Martindale Machete Cutlass.  Of very large proportions and with a multi-fullered blade and pronounced, upturned blade that is swollen towards the end.  Stamped  Martindale of England to the blade forte.  Grip made from lightwood and held together with a steel rivets.  There is a also a leather holding strap.

Machete in excellent condition

In excellent condition throughout – probably hardly used.  I believe that this type of machete is still being produced by the company and has been exported to many countries with the design remaining unhanged for a considerable period of time.  Although it could be used as a naval machete, it is most likely that this machete was used on land.  No scabbard – this type of machete tended to be used without a scabbard.  Blade length is 18 inches (23 inches overall).

British 20th Century Martindale Machete Cutlass

martindale-long-machete-2

A good and unused example of a British 20th Century Martindale Machete Cutlass.  Of very large proportions and with a multi-fullered blade and pronounced, upturned blade that is swollen towards the end.  The grip is made from some kind of lightwood and it is secured by means of steel rivets.  Stamped to Martindale of England (Birmingham) to the blade.

Machete of recent manufacture

It is likely to be of recent manufacture as I believe that these machetes are still manufactured and exported worldwide.  It does not come with a scabbard but I believe that most would not have been sheathed in a scabbard but carried loosely on a belt or just in the hand.  In excellent condition throughout.  Blade length is 25 inches (31 inches overall).

The blade is of heavy manufacture and well tempered and would have been a very serviceable military fighting knife.  The kukri comes complete with its original leather scabbard and also retains two by-knives.

Unusual Turkish 19th Century Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

This is an unusual piece as the style of the sword is reminiscent of the Italian Model 1833 Cavalry Sword but the blade is stamped with Arabic/Turkish cartouche markings which probably indicate issue to Middle Eastern i.e. Turkish Ottoman troops.  This could be an Italian or German export piece to Turkish troops.  Hilt comprises a moulded wooden grip, iron stirrup hilt with pronounced ball quillon finial.  Blade is slightly curved with deeply stamped marks.  Complete with original scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

British C.1850 Naval Midshipman’s Lionshead Hanger Dirk

british-1850-naval-hanger-dirk-3

A Rare British C.1850 Naval Midshipman’s Lionshead Hanger Dirk

This is a very unusual and seldom seen and rare British C.1850 Naval Midshipman’s lionshead hanger dirk that would have been carried by a Midshipman or junior officer.  A number of these have been noted over the years and it looks like that they were issued or acquired for use on board a ship of war – they would have been pretty effective for close hand combat.  It comprises a brass lionshead pommel, leather and wood grip bound with brass twistwire and a distinctly curved, plain blade – this example is particularly sharp.  It comes complete with its original leather and brass mounted scabbard.  Please see the images below of this weapon taken from the iconic work on British naval swords – Sword for Sea Service by Annis and May (1971).

Condition of the British Naval Midshipman Hanger Dirk

In excellent condition for its age – little wear to grip and blade and dent to chape – otherwise, fine.

This is a very attractive c.1815 Dutch Napoleonic Senior Officer Smallsword and typical of a late-Napoleonic senior officer’s sword or a sword type worn at court.  It is heavily influenced by French sword styles of the period and comprises a neo-classical female pommel and extravagantly decorated knucklebow.  The shellguard features the coat of arms of the Dutch royal family – this coat of arms was introduced in 1815 (including the royal motto – ‘ JE MAINTAINDRAI’) and I believe that this sword dates from around this period – is certainly a very early example.  The grip appears to made from incised leather.  The blade has the remains of its original blue and gilt decoration, including martial trophies and foliage.  It comes complete with its original brass and leather mounted scabbard.  Also has the original brass museum/collection tag to the hilt and scabbard.

Condition of the Smallsword

In very good condition for its age with wear to the blade – fading of the blue and gilt.

Specifications of the Smallsword

Blade length is 32 inches (37 inches overall).

1814 Dutch Napoleonic Silver-Hilted Infantry Officer Sword

dutch-1800-infantry-officer-sword-3

A rare and superb 1814 Dutch Napoleonic Silver-hilted Infantry Officer’s Sword

This is a rarely encountered Dutch Infantry Officer’s Sword with a solid silver hilt, chequered ebony grip and inset silver lozenge.  The knucklebow is deeply stamped with silver hallmarks that indicate a date of 1814 – please see this link for images of Dutch hallmarks of the period – https://www.925-1000.com/Fnetherlands_Date_Code.html.  The pronounced letter “E” is identical to the Dutch hallmark for 1814.  Another good link is here – https://www.zilver.nl/zilverkeuren/find/page=40.html.   Also see image below of Dutch silver hallmarks for 1814 – they correspond to those on the knucklebow.  The shellguard is decorated with a recumbent lion.  The triangular blade has the remains of blue and gilt decoration and includes martial trophies, floral tributes and victory wreaths.  The sword comes complete with its original silver mounted and black leather scabbard that is missing its chape.  If you can source or craft a plain silver chape this would become a terrific piece – very few Dutch Napoleonic swords come onto the market and especially examples with silver hilts.  With original brass museum/collection tag to the hilt.

Condition of the Sword

Sword in good condition for its age – blade with some wear and fading to blue and gilt.  Scabbard missing the chape.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 34 inches (39 inches overall).

C.1800 Napoleonic Hungarian Infantry Officer Sword

hungarian-1800-infantry-officer-sword-2

Extremely rare c.1800 Napoleonic Hungarian Infantry Officer Sword

This is a very attractive and scarce example of a c.1800 Napoleonic Hungarian infantry officer’s sword carried during the Napoleonic Wars.  It is a well crafted and quality piece with finely detailed and decorated brass, stirrup hilt and original leather and brass twistwire to the grip.  The wide, fighting  blade has a pronounced clip point.  The blade is profusely decorated with typical etched floral and military motifs.  It also exhibits traces of the original blue and gilt decoration that runs to over half of the length of the blade.  With original brass museum/collection tag attached to the hilt.  Very few of these original Napoleonic swords from Eastern Europe are available in the market and especially in this excellent condition.

Condition of the Sword

In fine condition for its age – blueing to blade has age darkened.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 32 inches (37 inches overall).

C.1750 French Continental Smallsword

french-european-1750-smallsword-2

A very fine c.1750 French Continental Smallsword

This is a fine and unusual c.1750 French  Continental steel-hilted smallsword from the Mid-18th Century and comprises a finely etched blade with floral, military and Turk’s head motifs to half of its length.  The blade is flat-backed with a wide forte and graduated towards the end.  This type of smallsword would have been carried by both a military officer and civilian and was popular during the first half of the 18th Century.  It is in excellent condition for its age.  The scabbard is missing but it is extremely rare to find any smallswords from this period with their original scabbards due to the relatively flimsy nature of their construction.  With original brass museum/collection tag attached to the hilt.

Condition of the Sword

In very fine condition with an extremely clean blade.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 30.5 inches (36 inches overall).
