British 1885 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Sword – 9th Lancers – Denbighshire Yeomanry

1885-british-cavalry-troopers-sword-3

An excellent British 1885 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Sword – 9th Lancers – Denbighshire Yeomanry

Here we have a very good example of a British 1885 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Sword carried by both the 9th Lancers and the Denbighshire Yeomanry (Wales).  It was made by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum and Company of Germany who manufactured large quantities of swords for the British Army during the latter half of the 19th Century due mainly to the fact that British sword makers could not meet demand.  This was an unusual pattern of British cavalry sword as it featured a pierced Maltese Cross in the hilt.  Grips are made from chequered leather.  This sword has extensive issue and date stamps to both the blade fortes and top of the hilt.  These regimental markings are repeated on the scabbard throat.  Both the 9th Lancers and the Denbighshire Yeomanry had interesting military histories and for more infomation on these famous British regiments go to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9th_Queen’s_Royal_Lancers and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denbighshire_Hussars.

Condition of the Sword

In terrific condition with a virtually mint blade.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 35 inches (41 inches overall).

English c.1690 Hunting Naval Officer’s Sword

1690-hunting-hanger-kings-head-mark-2

Excellent and scarce English c.1690 Hunting Naval Officer’s Sword

This is a very fine example of an English c.1690 hunting naval officer’s sword.  The sword comprises a staghorn grip and brass pommel and shell guard.  The slightly curved, unfullered blade is deeply impressed with a King’s head mark.  These marks are commonly associated with the German sword making family of Wundes, Solingen.  Many sword blades from this period were imported into England where they were mounted on English hilts.  This sword features a royal crown and profile to the pierced shell guard.  Swords of this type were very popular with English naval officers of the late-17th Century (see pic below) as they were effective within the cramped confines of a warship’s deck.

Condition of the Sword

In very good condition with fine patina to the hilt and blade.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 35 inches (41 inches overall).

British 1800’s Royal Navy Baleen Petty Officer’s Cosh

A good example of a British 1800’s Royal Navy Baleen Petty Officer’s Cosh.  These cosh’s were used to keep seaman in order or whilst press ganging.  This cosh is lead-weighted to either end and bound with cord and then blackened – probably tarred.  The cosh is made from whale baleen that enables it to be flexible.

Condition of the Cosh

British Napoleonic Royal Navy Petty Officer’s Cosh – GR Stamped

1800-royal-navy-cosh-2

Rare and possibly unique British Napoleonic Royal Navy Petty Officer’s Cosh – GR Stamped

It is extremely rare to find a British Napoleonic Royal Navy Petty Officer’s cosh that is GR Stamped.  This is such an example and I doubt if you will ever come across another one in the market.  It is also of high quality and features a hardwood grip with lead weighted and leather covered top and leather carrying strap and belt strap.  The cosh is heavily stamped with a royal crown and GR motif – difficult to make out in the photographs but it is there.  Fortunately, this official stamp is repeated at the end of the cosh.

Condition of the Cosh

In fine condition with a little service wear to the top.

Specifications of the Cosh

Length is 10 inches.

Late-19th Century Zulu Warrior’s Assegai Ikwla Stabbing Spear

antique-zulu-assegai-iklwa-stabbing-spear-2

Late-19th Century Zulu Warrior’s Assegai Ikwla Stabbing Spear

A fine example of a late-19th Century Zulu warrior’s Assegai Ikwla stabbing spear.  This was a common type of weapon in Africa but it was with the Zulu Nation that this spear is most famously known.  It has various names, including Assegai, Umkhonto and interestingly, Ikwla – apparently so-named because of the sound it made when withdrawn from a victim’s wound.  This was the type of weapon used against the British Army during the Zulu Wars of the 1870’s.  With finely hand wrought and hammered blade and hardwood shaft with great, deep age patina.

Condition of the Spear

In excellent shape for its age – blade with great colour – some age splits to shaft.

Length of the spear is 39 inches.

C.1700 English Hunting Naval Hanger Sword

1700-long-hunting-hanger-sword-2

A scarce C.1700 English Hunting Naval Hanger Sword

This is a scarce example of a C.1700 English Hunting Naval Hanger Sword with typical staghorn grip, brass pommel and shell guard.  It has an unusually long, unfullered blade that probably indicates a military, rather than a hunting role.  It would have been very effective when used as a naval cutlass as the blade length was ideal for close combat on the deck of a warship.

Condition of the Sword

Hilt in good condition – blade with heavy wear.

Scottish 19th Century 1857 Pattern Field Officer’s Sword – Named Wilkinson

scottish-1857-pattern-sword-wilky24563-3

scottish-1828-pattern-broadsword-IMAGE

Scottish 19th Century 1857 Pattern Field Officer’s Sword – Named Wilkinson Blade

A very interesting and unusual Scottish 19th Century 1857 Pattern Field Officer’s Sword with a named and numbered Wilkinson blade.  The Wilkinson records which came with the sword shows the original purchaser as an A.C. Christopher, in 1881. In the 1881 Army List there is a Lt. A.C. Christopher of the 78th (Seaforth) Highlanders.  The blade also has the etched name of M. Longfield and in the 1881 Army List there is only one M.Longfield who is serving in the 2nd Life Guards.  I think that the most likely scenario is that A.C. Christopher gave the sword  to M. Longfield as a gift and he decided to carry this “unofficial” pattern – officers during this period had a lot of leeway with the types of swords they carried (particularly within the elite Guards regiments) and many photographs from the late-19th Century and around the Boer War period show officers in the same regiment carrying different patterns of swords.  Both officers did well the British Army – Longfield became Lieutenant-Colonel of the 2nd Life Guards in 1903 and Christopher was ADC to the Governors of Bombay and Ceylon.  The sword comes with a lot of paperwork and history of the officers.

The sword has the typical steel, acanthus-leafed pierced bowl guard and retains all its original fishskin and silver twistwire to the grip.  Blade with fine etching and named, scrolled panel.  Complete with its leather Field Service scabbard.

Please note that this sword is featured in my book, The Scottish Sword 1600-1945 (Paladin Press), page 236 – see the pic below.

Condition of the Sword

In very good condition retaining much original polish.

Specifications of the Sword

Blade length is 35 inches (41 inches overall).

Unique and Rare English Powder Horn dated 1774 with Owner’s Name and Poem

A totally unique and original English Powder Horn dated 1774 and complete with the owner’s name and a hot poker branded poem.  The original owner was a certain Richard Walls of Milby, North Yorkshire.  Have no information about him but the village is so small that it would probably not be too difficult to find out who he is was via the parish records.  The poem is rather unusual and no doubt written in the vernacular of the period.  Here is what it appears to read or as I can read it!:

WHY DID JDONAS VENAS

BUT FOR THE SAKE OF SHOVE FOR SHOVE

WHY DID VENAS LOVE JDONAS

BUT FOR THE ORISALL

WHEAR NO DONE JS

RICHARD WALLS

MILBY 1774 RE

The horn has a great colour and patination and is a very characterful piece.

Condition of the Powder Horn

In excellent shape for its great age with no damage – only very minor nibbling to end of horn.

Specifications of the Powder Horn

Length of the powder horn is 12 inches.
