Indonesian 19th Century Decorated Bronze Lantaka Cannon

antique-lantaka-cannon-2

Original and rare Indonesian 19th Century Decorated Bronze Lantaka Cannon

An Indonesian 19th Century Decorated Bronze Lantaka Cannon.  These cast bronze swivel cannons were mounted on small craft and merchantmen and were effective in providing an easily manoeuverable weapon.  They were a popular choice for the defence of ships against pirates in South East Asia, the Phillipines and Malaysia.  They also served as a form of currency and were passed down from family to family as heirlooms.  This example is typical of the type and comprises a bronze barrel that is decorated with a series of geometric and swirling devices.  The end of the barrel is flared.  A simple wooden stand is also provided.  Please note that this lantaka is bronze and consequently, extremely heavy.

Historically Important Carved Walking Stick presented by King Edward VII

captain-welch-rn-walking-stick-2

An Historically Important Carved Walking Stick presented by King Edward VII

This Historically Important Carved Walking Stick was presented by King Edward VII in 1902 to Sir David Nairne Welch RN (1820-1912).  He was a British naval commander and Captain of the Royal Yachts, Fairy and Alberta from 1848-1878 – see photographs below which include Welch in the company of King Edward VII, Kaiser Wilhelm II and most of the crowned heads of Europe – also a photograph of the Royal Yacht Alberta.  He must have been a close confidant of the King and this walking stick was presented by the King to Welch in 1902, whilst at Balmoral, the royal residence in Scotland.  The walking stick has a solid silver collar that is engraved – “PRESENTED BY THE KING TO CAPT WELCH at Balmoral October 1902”.  The stick is also elaborately carved with the date 1902 and a series of thistles, roses and shamrocks, the national flowers of Scotland, England and Ireland.  It is interesting to note that the length of the walking stick matches exactly with the short stature of Sir David Nairne Welch RN – see the photographs.  This is a unique and fascinating object that has direct and historic links to the British Royal Family.

Condition of the Walking Stick

In excellent condition – ferrule to bottom looks to be missing – easy to replace.

Specifications of the Walking Stick

Length of the walking stick is32.5 inches.

French Model 1905 NCO’s Sword and Scabbard

french-model-1905-sword-3

Fine French Model 1905 NCO’s Sword and Scabbard

A good example of a French Model 1905 NCO’s Sword and Scabbard.  With finely crafted brass hilt and grip bound with brass twistwire.  Foward hilt guard with inset victory laurel wreath.  Blade is interesting in that it has been deeply impressed to the spine with the name GILL – not sure as to the significance of this as there was an English sword maker of the early 1800’s with that name although this sword is later.  Sword blade is unsharpened indicating that this was likely to be a parade sword –  by this stage of the 20th Century, swords of this type would not have been used in anger or on the battlefield.  Complete with original brass and leather mounted scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

Scottish 1750-1800 Highland Infantry Officer’s Basket-hilted Broadsword

A rare and complete Scottish 1750-1800 Highland Infantry Officer’s Basket-hilted Broadsword with fine, pierced iron basket hilt of Highland form.  With pierced hearts and roundels to the hilt.  Wooden grip and remains of tassels and red velvet buckskin liner.  The blade is engraved with name of Andrea Ferara and a running wolf mark to each side.  This was a common mark on German-made sword blades exported to Scotland during the 18th Century.  This sword is likely to have started life as a mid-18th Century Jacobite broadsword and was adapted later for use by a Scottish Highland infantry officer in the service of the British Army.  The sword comes complete with an iron and leather mounted scabbard.

Condition of the Sword

In good shape for its age – some minor losses to the hilt.  Blade in terrific shape – no pitting – very clean.
