C.1800’s Indo-Persian Decorated Wavy-bladed Sword

indo-persian-wavy-blade-sword-2

Superb and very attractive c.1800’s Indo-Persian decorated wavy-bladed sword with a heavily and deeply decorated steel hilt and blade.  The blade is decorated with flowers, inset brass panel and varied figures.  The hilt is also extensively decorated with scrolling foliage to the full extent of the hilt.  This blade style was quite popular in Indo-Persian weaponry and was used by both infantry and horsemen from the 17th-19th Century – it probably had little advantage in combat over a typically curved blade but was certainly more interesting!

Fine age patina to blade and hilt

In excellent condition for its age and with a wonderful age patina to both the blade and the hilt.  Both hilt and blade are rock solid with no movement.  A really pleasing piece that would display very well.  Blade length is 24 inches (29.5 inches overall).

Scottish Napoleonic Silver-Mounted Highland Officer’s Dirk

scottish-napoleonic-silver-dirk-3

scottish-1828-pattern-broadsword-IMAGE

A very nice, original and scarce Scottish Napoleonic silver-mounted Highland Officer’s dirk.  It is likely to have been carried by a Highland Infantry Officer during the early 1800’s.  The dirk comprises a carved bog oak, baluster grip with silver pommel cap.  This kind of baluster grip is very typical of Scottish Georgian military dirks.  The blade is plain – again very common – it is later in the 19th Century (particularly during the Victorian period) when Scottish dirk blades began to be etched with extensive decoration.

Tooled leather decoration to the scabbard

Another indicator of its Napoleonic origins is the heavily tooled leather decoration to the scabbard – see the pics.  The scabbard mounts are also solid silver – the silver is not hallmarked but is 100% guaranteed silver – it was not unusual for silver not to be hallmarked then although it was illegal not to do so!  Condition is very good for its age – only damage is to the bottom silver mount where over the years, it has creased and split.  Blade length is 10 inches (14 inches overall).  Please note:  These Scottish Napoleonic dirks are very rare so don’t miss out.

US Civil War Model 1860 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword

us-model-1860-staff-and-field-officers-sword-2

An original US Civil War  Model 1860 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword.  Of typical form and with gilt brass hilt comprising an embossed eagle to the front shell guard and to the rear, a panoply of flags, martial trophies and victory wreath.  The pommel is also decorated with a US eagle and the knucklebow has a series of floral motifs.   The grip is bound with fishskin.

US Model 1860 Staff and Field Blade etched with US eagle

The blade is straight and double-edged towards the point.  It is also etched with floral decorations, crossed lances and a US eagle.  During its service lifetime it appears that the blade was broken and has been re-attached – the quality of the work looks to indicate a contemporary repair – would be interesting to know the history of this sword!  No scabbard.  Blade length is 30 inches (36.5 inches overall).

British Napoleonic Lifeguard Officer’s Type Sword

british-1800-lifeguard-sword-2

A scarce British Napoleonic Lifeguard Officer’s Type sword of a type similar to those carried by Lifeguard Officers during the 1800’s.  The sword comprises a brass hilt with half shell guard and distinctive ovoid pommel and quillon.  The grip is wooden and with ribbed brass ferrules.  The Lifeguard regiments of the British Army were an elite force and tasked with protecting the royal monarch.  They carried their own pattern swords and this style became popular during the early 1800’s.  Most examples that I have come across have a plain blade and tend to be unmarked.  They would have been worn for dress occasions such as balls and regimental dinners, although this example has a pretty sturdy blade so would also have been effective in combat.

Blade double-edged towards the point

The blade is plain and double-edged towards the point.  In very good overall condition.  Blade length is 34.5 inches (41 inches overall).

British 1899 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

british-1899-pattern-cavalry-troopers-sword-3

A scarce example of a British 1899 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Sword.  These swords were issued at the end of the 19th Century and were a result of failures with previous patterns.  Unfortunately, this pattern did not help matters and problems included the fact that the user’s hand tended to slip up and down the long grip, especially when hot and sweaty.  The thickness of metal to the guard was also too thin, causing it to bend and buckle easily.  Because of its general fragility, most examples were susceptible to service wear and many have battered guards and worn grips.  This sword is quite typical of the type and has seen considerable service wear to the hilt.  I have actually never seen one in very good condition unlike their previous and subsequent patterns.  This was one of the reasons why it was replaced by the 1908 Pattern in a relatively short period of time.

Hilt stamped to Yeomanry Cavalry regiment

The hilt is stamped to the “I CO LY” – the “LY” represents Yeomanry Cavalry but have not been able to identify the “I CO”.  Blade is dated to 1899 and re-issued in 1902.  Complete with original steel scabbard.  Blade length is 33.5 inches (40 inches overall).

British Wilkinson 1845 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword

british-1845-pattern-infantry-officers-sword-3

An original 19th Century example of a British Wilkinson 1845 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword.  With typical gilt brass Gothic Hilt and royal “VR” cypher inset within the hilt.  The grip is covered in fishskin and twistwire and the blade is etched with a royal crown, “VR” cypher and scrolling foliage. Complete with steel scabbard.

Quality Wilkinson Sword manufacture

Special mention should be made concerning some excellent 1845 Pattern swords manufactured by Wilkinson.  The quality of these is very apparent, especially in the sturdy hilt construction and the crisp, deep etching to thick, wide blades.  A good heavy duty scabbard was also supplied in both steel and leather on steel.  These swords were made for proper service use and would have undergone strenuous testing at the Wilkinson factory.  This sword also has a picquet weight equivalent carried during social engagements.  There were never official regulations for the carrying of these lightweight versions, but they are very common and so must have been accepted unofficially by the authorities. Condition is good overall although the blade has been sharpened during its lifetime, leaving some loss of etching to one side.  The blade has a serial number – 25019 – dating the sword to 1882.  The original owner of the sword is unknown.  Blade length is 33 inches (39 inches overall).

C.WW1 Indian Assam Rifles Belt and Buckle

assam-rifles-belt-buckle-2

A rare and fine C.WW1 Indian Assam Rifles Belt and Buckle.  A scarce and good quality stamped brass belt buckle for a soldier in the Assam Rifles, probably during the First World War.  This is the oldest paramilitary force in India and can trace its history back to 1835 when it was originally formed by the British as the Cachar Levy.  It was formed to act as a protection force for the expanding British rule in the Assam region of India and during the First and Second World Wars, it served in both conflicts, both in Europe and India/Burma.

Designated the Assam Rifles in 1917

It was designated the Assam Rifles in 1917 and forces were amalgamated with the Gurkhas and probably explains the crossed kukris on the belt buckle.  The belt and buckle are in very good condition for it age and the leather is still strong.  Profusely marked to the inside of the belt with issue stamps.  The total length of the belt from end to end is 36 inches.

Antique African Zulu Warrior’s Assegai Spear

african-zulu-assegai-spear-2

Antique African Zulu Warrior’s Assegai spear.  With distinctive leaf-shaped blade with fine patina.  The blade exhibits a distinctive rib to its full length.  The blade is attached to a hardwood shaft and is bound with cordwire.  These short throwing or stabbing spears were also known as an Iklwa within the Zulu nation and proved a fearsome weapon in the hands of a Zulu warrior, most notably during the late-19th Century Zulu Wars against the British Army.

Flared terminal to the spear shaft

The wooden shaft of the spear has a flared terminal.  The overall condition of the spear  is very good – the blade has been cleaned but does show signs of wear and generally good age.  Total length of the spear  is 46 inches.  This assegai would make a great display piece especially when combined with a Zulu shield or knobkerrie.

French WW1 Model 1874 Bayonet Cut-Down Trench Knife

french-ww1-bayonet-knife-2

Scarce French WW1 Model 1874 Bayonet Cut-Down Trench Knife.  An original WW1 French Army trench fighting knife made from a cut-down French Model 1874 Epee Bayonet.  Made from a standard regulation issue Model 1874 Epee Bayonet – these bayonets were produced in vast quantities and carried right through from the end of the 19th Century and even during the First World War.

With stiletto-type blade

These cut-down Model 1874’s were very popular during the First World War because the stiletto-type blade made an excellent stabbing weapon for close combat fighting in the trenches.  The blade has been crudely ground towards the end of the blade.  Blade length is 10 inches (14.5 inches overall).

French Model 1874 Epee Bayonet with matching numbers

french-model-1874-bayonet-3

An excellent example of a French  Model 1874 Epee Bayonet with matching numbers to the hilt and scabbard.  This was the standard infantry bayonet of the French Army at the end of the 19th Century and well into the 20th when it was replaced by the cruciform-bladed bayonet commonly seen during the First World War.  They were produced in very large quantities but very few are found with matching numbers as most bayonets and scabbards are mis-matched.

Condition of the bayonet is excellent

This would have been quite normal as original bayonet and scabbard could easily have parted company during their lifetimes and they were all made to relatively the same specifications and so a bayonet would always fit another scabbard.  The blade is dated to April 1879 and was made at the government manufactory of St Etienne.  There are also inspector’s stamps and manufactory marks to the blade forte.  Condition of the bayonet is excellent with smooth and dark patination to the hilt and scabbard.  There is no pitting or staining to the blade – it is in virtually mint condition.  A fine piece.

Indo-Persian Dagger – 19th Century horn hilt and decorated blade

indo-persian-dagger-3

Excellent Indo-Persian Dagger – 19th Century horn hilt and decorated blade.  With carved and shaped horn grip and bone, possibly ivory, pommel.  The blade is extensively and deeply decorated to its whole length with hunting scenes involving the chasing of wild animals with hunters on horseback.  This type of scene is typical of Indo-Persian swords and daggers of this period.  It is also inlaid with brass.

Dagger comes complete with original scabbard

The dagger comes complete with its original stitched leather scabbard that has a bone tip.  The blade is double-edged and still quite sharp.  Condition is very good throughout.  This is a very typical style of dagger from the 19th Century and would make a nice addition to any collection of Indo-Persian antique weaponry.  Blade length is 9.5 inches (13.5 inches overall).

19th Century US Navy Brass-hilted Officer’s Sword – Horstmann

us-naval-militia-sword-2

A highly unusual 19th Century US Navy Brass-hilted Officer’s Sword – Horstmann.  This US Civil War period naval officer’s sword has a very well etched blade made by German sword maker, Horstmann and Sons.  The brass stirrup hilt is reminiscent of US infantry militia swords of the period but I have never seen one that is associated with the US Navy.  Both hilt and blade have always been together as evidenced by the smooth and darkened tang button.

Sword decorated with numerous naval motifs

The blade is decorated with numerous motifs including US eagle, anchor, scrolling foliage, stars and stripes shield, USN scroll and military lances.  The blade forte is stamped with the King’s head German Weyersberg sword making motif.  Condition of the sword is excellent and the blade etching is still bright and crisp.  No scabbard.  A rare piece.  Blade length is 30.5 inches (35 inches overall).

Antique African 19th Century Warrior’s Spear

african-antique-spear-2

An excellent antique 19th Century African warrior’s fighting spear.  With hand wrought iron spear head of leaf-shaped form and with distinctive medial ridge to the centre.  Dark, hardwood grip and distinctive turned iron foot.   The blade has a great colour and forged appearance.  Am not sure what particular region or tribe this is associated with and have ascribed it an African origin but open to any other suggestions.  What I like about the spear is the quality of its construction as this factor can vary widely in the field of African bladed weapons.  We are on safe ground with this one.

Spear would make a great display piece

The spear has got a great feel and weight and would make a great display piece, particularly when combined with a shield, axes and knobkerries.  The collecting of antique African weaponry is becoming quite popular and I would guess that it will become a strong collecting field in the future, with prices rising in parallel.  Length of the spear is 53 inches.

Imperial German Model 1898/05 Butcher Bayonet – Frister and Rossmann

german-s98-frister-rossmann-bayonet-3

Original Imperial German Model 1898/05 Butcher Bayonet – Frister and Rossmann.  Made by the company of Frister and Rossman  of Berlin – they were originally sewing machine makers who turned to producing bayonets during the First World War.  This was quite common to many German manufacturers, especially as the war progressed and traditional arms makers could not cope with demand from the army.  These bayonets were issued to German infantry troops throughout the war although towards the end of the war, ersatz bayonets took over these model pattern bayonets.  The bayonet is clearly maker marked to the blade forte and also has inspector’s stamps to the blade spine and scabbard.  The ribbed wooden grips are held together with steel riveted screws.

Bayonet complete with original scabbard

The bayonet comes complete with its original steel scabbard – both hilt and scabbard with dark age patination – has not been cleaned or messed about with.  Blade with appropriate age staining in places.  Is an Imperial German bayonet maker that is not as commonly encountered in the bayonet collecting market.  Blade length is 14.5 inches (20 inches overall).

The sword has iron hilt and scabbard mounts, covered in black painted fishskin.  The grip is bound with the original black cotton binding.  The heavy blade would have been devastating in the field of combat.  Condition of the blade is excellent.  Blade length is 27 inches (34 inches overall).

Collection of British Sheffield Antique Mother-of-Pearl Penknives

mother-of-pearl-penknives-1

Excellent collection of British Sheffield antique mother-of-pearl penknives.  They probably date from the late-19th to the early 20th Century.  It is likely that these were used as fruit knives or handy general purpose knives that could be slipped into a pocket.  There are eight in total and they exhibit the high quality that you would associate with Sheffield-made knives.  Sheffield knives were exported throughout the world but were particularly popular in the United States during the 19th Century where the famous bowie knife was manufactured in large quantities in Sheffield and then shipped to the United States where they became part of that country’s martial history.

Mother-of-Pearl Penknives in good condition

Maker names to the penknives include Rodgers, J B James, Doidge, Wheatley, and W. Gray.  These were all famous Sheffield blade-makers who made a wide variety of knives for a global market.  Blade lengths vary from 4 inches to 5.5 inches.  Condition is good overall – one knife with heavy pitting to blade.
