WW1 Imperial German Trench Knife Dagger

german-ww1-trench-knife-2

A completely unique and original WW1 Imperial German Trench Knife Dagger.  This dagger was purchased in the Verdun area of North Eastern France and came from a local family whose forebears had served in the French Army and the dagger was retrieved from a German trench during the war. If you want to hear more detailed provenance for this dagger please contact me.  The dagger comprises a very large animal bone grip that has been moulded to perfectly fit into a soldier’s hand and would have been a devastating weapon when used in the numerous trench raids between German, French and British troops.  The blade is also quite unusual in its shape and profile.  I would assume that the blade has been made from a contemporary edged weapon – probably a bayonet.  Condition is excellent – few age cracks to the bone hilt as expected for a piece of this great age.  Blade length is 10 inches (15 inches overall).

Scottish 19th Century Highland Dress Dirk

scottish-19th-century-dirk-2

free-shipping-1

An original 19th Century Scottish Highland Dirk with large citrine to the pommel.  The grip is made from staghorn and the hilt mounts are made from brass.  The blade has typical Scottish Highland dirk attributes, including a scalloped edge and is double-edged towards the point.  Both hilt and blade are solid with no movement.  The pommel has a large, faceted pommel which still retains a great colour and sparkle – has not been dulled or scratched.  A great piece when held in the hand.

In excellent condition throughout

Only markings that I can see are the letters, “OUR” near the blade forte – assume that it is the remains of a maker’s name?  Most of these Scottish dirks would have been made in either Glasgow or Edinburgh.  In excellent condition throughout and a great addition to any collection of Scottish Highland dirks.  Both hilt and blade are rock solid and with no movement.  Blade length is 8.5 inches (14 inches overall).

Silver Mounted Knife Dirk with Damascus Blade

damascus-silver-knife-2

A very well made Silver Mounted Knife Dirk with Damascus Blade.  A good example of a solid silver mounted dirk dagger with heavy silver hilt mounts and a hardwood, faceted grip.  The style of the dirk is very much in a Napoleonic style but this is probably a later 20th Century piece in emulation of these earlier knives.  The blade is decorated with an attractive Damascus pattern to its full length.  Great balance and weight when held in the hand.Blade length is 6 inches (10 inches overall).

Scottish C.1700’s Highland Knife

scottish-1740-dagger-2

A truly superb and original Scottish C.1700’s Highland Knife.  I would date this knife to around the first quarter to half of the 18th Century and is of type that would have been worn at the time of the Battle of Culloden (1746).  The quality of this knife is excellent and is a testament to the skills of the homegrown craftsmen of the Scottish Highlands – this would have been made by an individual, most particularly the hilt that comprises a baluster design of turned bone that is inset with small silver nails in the decoration of a tree or foliage.  This is very typical of the naïve type of work seen in th decorative arts of the period and especially so in more remote areas such as the Scottish Highlands.  The blade is of top quality and has the distinctive notched design that is seen on Scottish Highland dirks knives.  The blade has two deeply incised fullers and the tempering is very good, indicating that it would have been very effective both as a hunting knife and personal weapon.  Condition is excellent with only one old age crack to the bone hilt and pleasant age darkening and patina to the handle.  A lovely piece.  Blade length is 10 inches (15 inches overall)

English C.1770’s American Rev War Naval Officer’s Dirk

english-1770-naval-dirk-dagger-3

An extremely rare and possibly unique English C.1770’s American Rev War Naval Officer’s Dirk.  This is the earliest example of a British Royal Navy Officer’s fighting dirk that I have come across that is so early.  What indicates its early date from the c.1770’s is the distinctive lionshead pommel that is identical in style to English infantry officers’ swords of the period, most notably those infantry swords with slotted hilts that are associated with the American Revolutionary War period.  For more information and to see this particular lionshead hilt of the 1770’s, please see Neumann’s, Swords and Blades of the American Revolution – there are a number of examples of this hilt type in his excellent book.  The dirk has a carved and ribbed ivory grip that has now developed a pleasing orange tone.  The hilt mounts are brass and there would have been a forward guard to the dirk that has long gone and I would say that it was probably loss at the time the dirk was carried as the wear to this area is of great age and smoothness.  The dirk has a plain, unfullered blade which is interesting because it shows that we are dealing with a period pre-blueing and gilding of blades.  This was to come during the Napoleonic period and not the American Revolutionary period.  We are lucky in having the original leather and brass mounted scabbard.  Blade has some general age wear to both sides that is consistent with it being in a saltwater environment.  There are also a few minor nicks to the leather of the scabbard but it is still robust and stable.  Blade length is 14 inches (18.5 inches overall).  I doubt whether you will come across another example of such an early Royal Navy dirk in a long time and for collectors of American Revolutionary War naval weapons, this is a rare find.

C.1800’s French Napoleonic Junior Naval Officer’s Dirk

napoleonic-naval-dirk-3

A very fine C.1800’s French Napoleonic Junior Naval Officer’s Dirk.  This would most likely have been carried by a young officer of equivalent midshipman grade as in the Royal Navy and is typical of the small dirks that you find were carried by officers from both Britain and France during the Napoleonic Wars and for a few years afterwards.  The dirk comprises a well carved and detailed ebony grip with brass pommel and crossguard.  The blade is of lenticular form and plain.  The dirk comes complete with its original leather and brass mounted scabbard.  Condition of the dirk is very good and there is only minor age wear to the blade.  Blade length is 4.75 inches (8.5 inches overall).

Captured French Model 1866 Bayonet – German Regiment

german-french-model-1866-bayonet-3

A super rare and original Captured French Model 1866 Bayonet – German Regiment.  This bayonet has been converted for subsequent German use.  The hook quillon of the bayonet is overstamped with the regimental designation of the 40th Reserve Landwehr Infantry Regiment.  This is repeated to the top of the steel scabbard that has also had its frog stud replaced and converted for use with an Imperial German frog – the stud is also stamped with official German inspector’s marks.  The French bayonet is dated to 1867 on the blade spine.  Am assuming that this was captured during the Franco-Prussian War and supplied to German troops.  Blade is very clean.  Great piece for the specialist German bayonet collector.  Blade length is 22.5 inches (27.5 inches overall).

Chinese Solid Silver Hallmarked Trousse Set

chinese-silver-trousse-3

This is a very fine Chinese Solid Silver Hallmarked Trousse Set.  Comprising a great hardwood grip mounted in silver.  The trousse case is made from shagreen with silver mounts.  Also comes complete with chop sticks and toothpick(?) – all made from natural animal tooth and silver mounted – once mount missing.  The knife is exceptionally large with a long blade which makes me think that this was made for a man rather than a woman as the female versions are smaller.  Most of the Chinese trousses’ that come onto the market are of naturally smaller proportions but this is a substantial piece and consequently quite rare.  Some small losses to the case.  The bottom silver mount is deeply impressed with a Chinese silver mark.  A very high quality piece.  Blade length is 7.5 inches (12 inches overall).

Polish Napoleonic 7th/9th Lancers Chapska

 polish-lancers-chapska-1

A Polish Napoleonic 7th/9th Lancers Chapska.  This is a helmet for a Polish Lancer of the 7th/9th Lancer Vistula Legion 1807 – 1812. This regiment fought against the British at Abuera in 1811 and were also part of the invasion force that entered Russia in 1812.  The helmet is in very good condition and definitely of 19th Century vintage.  I am selling on behalf of another customer and headgear of this period is not my speciality so I am unable to guarantee it 100% as being original to the period although the quality and style of manufacture is excellent.  The price reflects this and the buyer must make up their own mind about this before purchase as there are no returns on this item.  If you have any questions please let me know and I will pass them on to my consignee.

British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer’s Sword

british-1796-pattern-light-cavalry-officers-sword-3

A fine example of a British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officer’s Sword with blue and gilt blade.  This sword is in very good condition and comprises a steel stirrup hilt with all original leather wrap to the grip and bound with silver and copper twistwire.  The blade retains much of its original blue and gilt decoration that includes royal coat of arms, GR (George III) royal cypher, stands of arms and foliage.  What makes this sword particularly interesting is that the blade has been service sharpened for field use – it has taken away some of the decoration but does show that the sword was most likely used in combat during the Napoleonic period.  The blade is in very good condition and there is no pitting or wear – still bright towards the end of the blade.  The sword comes complete with its original steel and leather scabbard.  Both hilt and blade are rock solid with no movement or looseness.  Blade length is 36.25 inches (42.5 inches overall).  A great addition to any collection of British Napoleonic swords.

British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword

british-1796-pattern-light-cavalry-troopers-sword-3

An original British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sword.  This iconic British military sword was carried throughout the Napoleonic Wars and used in such famous battles as Salamanca(1812) and Waterloo (1815).  This sword has obviously seen service and is quite an old warhorse.  It comprises a steel stirrup hilt with a leather bound grip – the leather is original to the grip with some light losses.  The sword has a large and wide hatchet-type blade that has some commensurate age wear and would have been an effective slashing and cutting sword in the field – is very large and impressive in the hand and combined with the scabbard, makes a weighty piece.  The sword comes complete with its original heavy iron scabbard with original hanging rings and both sword and scabbard are a tight fit so some force needed to pull out.  Missing the scabbard throat.  The hilt and scabbard have not been cleaned and it is an untouched piece.  A great addition to any collection of British Napoleonic swords – would make a great display piece.  Blade length is 32.5 inches (37.5 inches overall).

British 1827 Pattern Naval Officer’s Sword

british-1827-pattern-naval-officers-sword-2

A very impressive and substantial British 1827 Pattern Naval Officer’s Sword.  This is one of the largest examples of an 1827 Pattern Naval Officer’s Sword that I have come across in many years and this is due to the enormous pipe-backed and quillpoint blade that would have made this a devastating fighting officer’s sword.  This is a very early example and probably dates to no later than 1830 as it exhibits a plain blade which is symptomatic of these early pattern blades.  The hilt has a finely detailed lionshead pommel and the grip is made from sharkskin and bound with brass twistwire.  The half basket hilt has an embossed crown and anchor motif and it has a folding guard.  The blade has dark age staining in places commensurate with its age.  Both hilt and blade are rock solid with no movement.  This would make a great display piece for the collector of British naval officers’ swords.  Blade length is 30.5 inches (36 inches overall).
